JAMES B. IPAFFORD, OF WBAY, GEORGIA.
FIRE-SCREEN.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES B. PAFroRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at ray, in the county of Irwin and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in screens for fire places, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, comprising detachable guard and screen members of a novel construction which may be easily and quickly positioned upon the hearth of a fire place and which will effectively perform the functions for which they are devised.
With the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangeinent of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in applied posit-ion, the screen and the guard being connected together. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the device. Fig. 3 is a partial elevation of the lower portion of the screen member. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevation illustrating the manner of connecting the members 7 and 2.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the guard member of the improved device. This guard member comprises a substantially U-shaped structure having its side arms braced and connected with the body portion 2 through the medium of the angularly arranged strips 3. The guard is preferably constructed of sheet iron of a suitable gage and the forward portions of the side arms 4 have their upper edges bent over as designated by the nu meral 5 whereby greater rigidity as well as ornamentality is given to the arms. The extremities of the arms 4 are connected through the medium of a longitudinally eX- tending rod 6, so that the said arms and body are arranged in perfect right angular relation with each other, and the device, while light, is rendered strong and effective and at the same time can be easily positioned upon the hearth adjacent the guard or be removed therefrom when desired. member 2 of the guard is adapted to extend the length of the fire place and to be positioned upon the hearth, so as to protect the hearth and floor from the coals accidentally falling from the grate upon the hearth.
The numeral 7 designates the screen member of the device. This screen member is also preferably constructed of sheet iron and is of an approximately rectangular formation, of a height and width sutficient to entirely inclose the opening within the fire place. The screen 7 has its upper extremity provided with a suitable handle 8 and is also provided adjacent its vertical edges with cleats 9 which are adapted for engagement with rods 10 having their ends offset and threaded as at 11 and adapted to be inserted through suitable openings provided within the forward ends of the arms 4 of the guard member and to be secured thereto through the medium of suitable nuts 12. The lower portion of the screen 7 adjacent its vertical edges is provided with suitable slits or cut-away portions 13, so as to provide means whereby the said screen may be readily slipped over the arms 4 of the guard member 1. The opposite or rear face of the body 2 of the guard member 1 is provided with a suitable eye 14, while the rear face of the screen 7 is provided with a hook 15 adapted to engage the said eye, and thus effectively secure the screen upon the guard.
It is obvious that the screen member and the guard are only connected together when there is no necessity for a fire within the grate and by constructing the said screen as a separate element from the guard it will be seen that both of the members perform separate functions, and it is to be understood that while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction, within the scope of the following claim may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is In a device for the purpose intended, a substantially U-shaped guard member, angular brace members connecting the arms and the body of the guard member, a longitudinally extending rod connecting the extremities of the arms, and a screen member, said screen member comprising a substantially rectangular plate provlded with a handle and having its lower portion slit vertically and adapted to be inserted over the In testimony whereof I affix my signature arms of the guard member, looselydconnectin presence of two Witnesses.
