UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC W. SULLIVAN, OF NEAR PELHAM, TENNESSEE.
COMBINED SAFETY ANDIRONS AND SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 658,295, dated September 18, 1900. Application led March 31, 1899. Serial No. 711,317. (No model.)
To afZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IsAAo W. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing near Pelham, in the county of Grundy, State of Tennessee, have invented a Combined Fire-Screen and Andirons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to so cornbine a ire-screen and andirons that each shall furnish a support or brace for the other, While the andirons shall be adapted for lateral adj ustment and also for convenient detachment.
The construction and arrangement of parts are as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, (two sheets.) .Figure I is a perspective view showing a screen and andirons combined as in use. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the curved bar which supports the andirons and forms an attachment of the screen when in use.
The screen I is formed of wovensteel wire and is bent into the usual angular form. A strip of band-iron E is riveted to the inner side of the screen and serves to brace and strengthen the same. Hooks G are riveted to the horizontal portion of such strip E and project inward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
B indicates a curved bar provided with feet F at the ends of its vertical legs. In use it is arranged parallel to the fiat front portion of the screen I and is held in place detachably by means of the hooks G, which project over its upper edge.
The andirons D have the usual form, as regards their body portion and inner ends, but their upwardly-extended front ends are constructed with hooks, which catch over the horizontal portion of the bar B, as shown best in Fig. 2. rlhus the andirons D are supported at their front ends by the said bar B and legs are dispensed with. In other Words, by the described engagement of the hooked front ends of the andirons with bar'B the andirons are duly supported and also adapted for lateral adjustment toward or from each other, as required to accommodate logs of different lengths or to hold coal-baskets that may be set thereon. For convenience of handling the andirons D, as required for adjustment or removal of the same, they are provided with rings C, which are inserted in their hooked ends, as shown.
It is apparent that by this construction and arrangement of parts the screen is supported and braced in a most effective manner, so that it cannot be overturned by accident, thereby insuring greater protection and safety from iire than is practicable with screens arranged in the usual way. It is further apparent that the bar B constitutes a firm support for the andirons D independently of the screen, of which it forms an attachment. The several parts-to wit, the screen I, the bar B, and the andirons D-inay be quickly set up and connected in working position and as readily separated and removed.
What I claim isl. The combination of the woven wire screen, and andirons, having hooks at their extended front ends, a bar for detachable engagement of said hooks and support of the andirons, and devices attached to the screen for holding said bar in place, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a tire-screen and hooks attached to the inner side of the same, of a curved supporting-bar adapted to rest upon the floor and which is loosely engaged by said hooks, and andirons whose front ends are supported detachably upon the horizontal portion of said bar, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, :with a fire-screen and andirons having hooks at their extended front ends and a strip of band-iron riveted to the screen on the inner side for bracing the same as specified, hooks attached to said strip and projecting inwardly, of a curved bar B, supported independently upon the iioor or hearth, and arranged parallel to the screen proper, its horizontal upper portion being engaged by the aforesaid hooks whereby the bar is held in loose connection with the screen proper and thereby adapted for supporting the andirons in the manner shown and described.
I. W. SULLIVAN.
