GEARING-SI-IIELD.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, I-IARRY Bum), a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing- Shields; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to gearing shields and more particularly to a device of that character for use on washing machines; the object of the invention being to provide a shield which may be easily and quickly positioned over the driving gearing of a washing machine, or like device, and may be se curely held in place to protect the user when the machine is in operation. In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure I is a perspective view of a washing machine equipped with a shield constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a perspective view of a portion of the Washing machine, showing the edge strap of the shield and the spacing legs, the gearing of the machine being omitted. Fig. III is an enlarged detail view of one of the legs, showing its connection with the shield strap. Fig. IV is a similar view of the spacing leg which is fixed permanently to the shield strap.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates a washing machine of suitable construction, which is illustrated to show the application of my improved shield. Fixed to the side of the machine are laterally turned legs 2, preferably formed of spring metal and having studs 3 on their outer ends.
4 designates the shield, which comprises a wire mesh body 5, shaped to inclose the gearing of the machine upon which the shield is mounted, and 6 the edge strap for holding the mesh body; said strap being preferably formed of angle iron. In the outer member of the strap 6 are apertures 7 adapted for receiving the studs 3 on the Specification of Letters Patent.

fixed legs 2. Fixed to the flange in a position to balance the other mountings, is a leg 8, which is adapted to bear against the side of the machine and hold the shield in place.
Presuming the shield to be constructed as described, and the straps 2 to be fixed to the side of the machine, as shown in Fig, II, the shield is passed over the gearing and the studs 3 fitted through the apertures in the strap flange; the legs 2 being spaced so that it is necessary to spring same somewhat to enable the studs to gain their seats. With the shield hung on the two fixed legs, the shield leg 8 will bear against the side of the machine and hold the shield in position.
It is apparent that the shield may be easily and quickly removed by lifting its lower edge and springing the fixed legs slightly to permit the flange to be drawn off of the studs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. The combination with a body having projecting legs, of a gearing shield having an edge strap sprung onto said body legs, said shield having a spacing leg fixed thereto and engaging said body, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a machine having laterally projecting legs provided with studs, of a gearing shield having an edge strap provided with apertures and with a spacing leg, said shield being supported on the machine legs with the leg studs projected through the strap apertures, and said spacing leg being in engagement with the machine body, substantially as set forth.
3. A gearing shield comprising a mesh body, a strap at the edge of the mesh body having apertures therein, a machine, having legs fixed thereto and provided with laterally projecting studs adapted for projection through the apertures in the shield strap, and a leg fixed to said strap and adapted for abutment against the machine, the machine legs being so arranged that the shield strap is sprung thereover, substantially as set forth.
