DISPLAY DEVICE.
` Application sied april 4,
To all 'who/1a may concer/n.: i
Be it known that l, WILLIAM A. RiNGLnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fhiladelpllia.l county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania', have invented a new and useful Display Device, of which the followin@ is a specification.
liy present invention comprehends a novel construction and arrangement of a display device formed from one or more metallic strips which are lapped upon themselves in `such a manner as to form a series of resilient pockets which will yieldingly hold in place any desired material which it is desired to display, such as for example, stencils, cards, many different types of notices and memo-y randa, small tools and in fact any desired type of article.
It further comprehends a novel construction of a display device of the character aforesaid and novel means for securing it in position with respect to a support.
@ther novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description and the appended claims.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings embodiments thereof which are at present preferred by me, since 'these embodiments will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is,how ever, to be understood that the var ious instrumentalities of which my inventlon consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents, in side elevation, a display device, embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents, in front elevation, the construction seen in Figure 1, in assembled position with respect to a support.
Figure Brepresents, in side elevation, the construction seen in Figure 2.
Figure l represents, in front elevation, a plurality of strips and their supports.
Figure 5 represents a section on line 5 5 of Figure il.
Figure 6 represents a front elevation of a support and certain of its adjuncts.
1922. Serial No. 549,446.
Figure 7 represents, in side elevation, a plurality of aligned display strips showing more particularly the manner in which two strips can be connected together.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings.
The display device in vits simplest form consists of a strip of material 1 preferably made of metal which is folded upon its-elf to form the `pockets 2, the strip being provided with the upwardly extending portions 3 which merge into the downwardly extending portions 4l at the back by means of the curved hinge forming portion 6. rlhe portion 3 terminates above the curved hinge forming portion 5 of a superimposed pocket 4and is rounded, as at 6, and then extends downwardly, as at 7, a sufficient distance to form the desired depth ofthe pocket 2. rllhe free ends 8 of the strip form terminals so that such free ends can be secured to a support 9, which forms a backing, by means of fastening devices 10. The strip is stiffened intermediate its ends by means of the fastening devices 11 which consist of straight pieces of wire,`as shown, having the free ends deflected to form the eyes 12 through which are passed fastening devices 13.
In Figures 4 .and 5, I have shown a plurality of the strips 1 secured to a support 9 with a modified form of fastening device to contribute to support the strips at spaced intervals throughout their length. In this embodiment of fastening device, lll designates the fastening device which consists of a strip of material such as sheet metal secured to the support at desired intervals by means of fastening devices 15 and having its free end off set, as indicated at 16.
The off-set portion 16 is `adapted to have a` strip slid over it so that it is positioned between the downward extension 7 and the upward extension 3, as will be understood by reference to Figure 5.
It will be apparent from Figure 7 that different strips can be readily connected together by simply interlocking the terminal loop at the end 0f one strip with the terminal loop of an aligned strip and then locking the strips together by effecting relative lateral or longitudinal movement of such strips. The terminal portion of one strip is shown in Figure 7 at I7 and the terminal portion of the other strip is indicated by 18. Y
19 designates an article which is to be displayed. It will be seen that when an article is inserted in position in a pocket the construction is such that a. resilient loclring` action takes place, the grip being etfected intermediate the top and bottom ot the pocket. It will be understood that when the top @t a pocket is bent outwardly such movement is resisted by the top portion of the next pocket so that a resilient locking action takes place.
It will be apparent that my present invention in its simplest form consists simply of a single display strip as herein disclosed which can be secured to anyxdesired article or object or one or more of them can be secured to a support.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a new and useful display device which embodies the features of advantage enuvinerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance., shown and described preferred embodiments thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is lto be understood that such embodiments are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacriicing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is n l. A display device, comprising -a strip or" sheet material overlapped upon itsell to form a series of pockets extending in the same direction with double outer walls, the inner walls of one pocket acting resiliently on the outer walls of an adjacent pocket only at points intermediately o'l' the top and bottom of such adjacent pocket.
2. A display device, comprising a strip of sheet material overlapped upon itself to torni a series of pockets extending in the same direction and having its free ends :forming terminals7 a support, and means sea-ted in certain ot' said pockets to secure said strip to said support.
A display device, comprising a strip of sheet metal overlapped upon itself to Iform pockets having a single inner wall VILLIAM A. RINGLER.
