KNOCKDO'WN EASEL.
Application filed December 10, 1921. Serial No. 521,464.
To all 4.0 10m it may concern Be it known that-I, DAVID LEVIGTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Knockdown Easel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of display cardsand the like.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide an easel designed to be employed for detachably supporting various articles of merchandise in a manner whereby the goods may be conspicuously displayed for sale on counters, showcases and elsewhere, and which is adapted to be provided in knockdown form for occupying limited'space when not in use. The invention resides mainly in the provision of two separate sur-' face elements which may be of card board or other bendable material, and the central parts of both elements are correspondingly slotted from opposite portions of their edges toward their centers so that the unslotted part of one element may be removably fitted in the slot of the other element for disposing the elements in cruciform fashion to provide radially disposed leaf members. In each leaf member may be slits of forms to provide supporting members adapted to be bent in outward angular directions so that articles of merchandise may be detachably fastened on the leaf member for being displayed for sale, and means may also be provided for releasably holding the interfitted parts of the elements in crosswise arrangement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a knockdown easel of a simple and efficient construction which may be made in any appropriate shape and size.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing forming apart of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan of one of the surface elements or boards employed in my improved knockdown easel.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig; 3, and
Fig.3 is a perspective view of the easel.
The. easel has two corresponding surface elements or boards 10 and 11 which may be made in suitable shapes and sizes of card board or other appropriate bendable material, though the form of each of the elenients shown is substantially rectangular. Extending from the central part of one of the edges of the board element 10 is a slit or slot, as 12, which terminates approximately in the center of the element, and extending from the central part of the opposite edge of the board element 11 is a similar slit or slot which also terminates in the center of the element ll. Each of the slits 12 has a portion, as 14, and this'portion of each element is of a width so that the other element maybe freely accommodated therein.
When the easel is assembled the board elements 10 and 11 are disposed crosswise of each other, and the unslitted part of each element is removably fitted in the slit. of the other element so that both elements are in cruciform or X-shaped arrangement for being positioned endwise, as shown in Fig. 3, on a counter, showcase and elsewhere. This manner of assembling the elements provides radially disposed leaf members 15, 15 and 16, 16*, and to permit articles of merchandise to be detachably mounted on the easel so as to be displayed for sale, in each of the leaf members may be one or a number of similar spaced slits, as 17, 17, 17" Each of the slits 17, 17 17 may be of forms somewhat of the shape of an inverted U so that the parts of the leaf members within the U- shaped slits provide supporting members or fingers 18, 18, 18" which may be bent angularly outward. if desired to allow articles of merchandise to be fastened thereto by any suitable means.
hen the board elements 10 and 11 are in cruciform arrangement, as explained, they may be releasably held against accidentally collapsing by providing at the edge of each board element opposite to its slit 12 a slot, as 19, which is on alinement with the slit 12 The part of the slit 12 of each of the board elements 10 and 11 between the wide portion 14 and the edge of the element is formed in somewhat the shape of a Z, as at 20, to
provide two adjacent tongues, as 21 and 22, both of which are preferably of substantially triangular shapes. The tongues 21. and 22 of each of the board elements are of combined sizes so that they may be freely accommodated in the slot 19 of'the other board element, and following the 'interfitting of the board elements in crosswise fashion the tongues of each element are removably inserted in the slot 19 of the other element so that the tongueswill span in overlapping arrangement with two of the tongues being disposed upon each face of the elements. The board elements will then be releasably held in cruciform fashion for effectual display of the goods carried thereon, and by detachably connecting the board elements in this manner they may be packed in knocked down forms in compact parcels for being readily assembled When wanted for use.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not Wish to'be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore, I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall With the scope thereof. r
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letter Patent s 1 1. A knock down easel, comprising two separate substantially rectangular bendable board elements and the elements having slits extending from opposite edges to- Ward their centers so that the unslitted also having a slot intermediate its ends, and tongues oneach element adapted to be removably inserted in the last mentioned slot of-the other element for releasably holding the elements \in crosswise position.
2. A knockdown easel, comprising two separate substantially rectangular bendable board elements and the elements having slits extending from opposite edges toward their centers so that the 'unslitt-ed parts of one element may be 'removably fitted in the slit of the other element for arranging the ele ments in cruciform fashion the unslitted part ofeach board element also having a slot in spaced alinement to its slit, and bendable tongues on each element adapted to be removably inserted through the last mentioned slot'of the other element as well as being disposed in spanning overlapping arrangement'on the second element for releasably holding the elements in crosswise arrangement. r
This specification signed and witnessed this 9th day of December, A. 11 1921. DAVID LEVIGTON.
