ATTORNEYS ROUSSEAU FORBY HAYNES, F LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS MAGAZINE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Application filed February 16, 1910. Serial No. 544,202.
' dent of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Magazine-Holder, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is a magazine holder by which the modern heavy magazine may be conveniently grasped and supported While reading, and belongs to that class of such devices as embody a tubular hand-grip of spring metal split lengthwise and having opposed longitudinal jaws at the edges, arranged to firmly bind on the opposite sides of the magazine adjacent to the rear edge.
The object of the invention is to provide in connection with the hand grip, stops which are arranged to prevent the application of the jaws to the magazine to an extent to interfere with the opening of the magazine.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder constructed in accordance with my invention as applied to a magazine; Fig. 2 is an inner face view of the holder; Fig. 3 is a plan of the same; Fig. 4 is a side view of a modified form of the holder; Fig. 5 is a plan of the holder shown in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a plan of a still further form of the holder.
Referring more particularly to the form of the invention as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the holder comprises a tubular handgrip 10 of spring sheet metal, the tube being split lengthwise, with the edge portions turned to provide opposed jaws 11, arranged to engage the magazine at opposite sides adjacent to the rear edge, as shown in Fig. 1. The jaws at each end of the holder are separated from the body of the tubular hand-grip by slotting the tube at these points and turning the metal inwardly at the inner edges of the slots to form opposed lips 12, the lips serving to limit the insertion of the magazine between the jaws and prevent the magazine from passing within the body of the tube, in which event the opening of the magazine would be interfered with. The jaws 11 at one end are extended slightly beyond the end of the hand-grip and flare outwardly to facilitate the application of the holder to the magazine, as by passing the holder over the rear edge of the magazine from one end.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the holders are corrugated circumferentially, with the corrugations extending through the jaws. This construction adds stiffness and strength to the holder and adapts it to be grasped with greater firmness.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the holder is in all respects the same as that described, except that it is provided with a helical spring 13 arranged interiorly of the grip, with its ends connected thereto adjacent to the jaws and tending to draw the latter together, thus assisting the spring of the metal to forcibly press the jaws to the magazine.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6, the edges of the metal at the split portion of the grip instead of being turned outwardly to form the opposed jaws, are turned inwardly, forming the opposed jaws 11, contained within the body of the tube, the jaws 11 having inwardly-turned lips 12 corresponding to the lips 12, and serving a like purpose.
Any form of the holder shown, when applied to the magazine, affords a substantial handle or grip by which the magazine is grasped, and does not interfere with the turning over of the pages.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A magazine holder comprising a tubular hand-grip of spring material split along its length and provided with opposed longitudinal aws at the edges, arranged to bind the magazine at opposite sides adjacent to the rear edge, and inwardly-extended lips at the inner edges of the jaws to limit the insertion of the magazine.
2. A magazine holder comprising a handgrip havin opposed spring clamping jaws adapted to ind a ma azine at 0pp0s1te sides adjacent to the rear e ge, and stops arrangai to prevent the application of the grip to the magazine to an extent to interfere with the opening of the magazine.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to thisspecification in the presence of two SllbSCIlblIlg witnesses.
ROUSSEAU FORBY HAYNES.
