Description

Juiy 30, 1935- c. s. BRITTON CONNECTION Filed March 21, 1953 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IE:
Patented July 30, 1935 I i 1 UNITED STATES OFFICE CONNECTION Charles S'. Britton, Bratenahl Village, Ohio, .assignor to Carter Products corporation, cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio 1 Application March 21, 193a seal No; saints 3 claims, (01. 306-21) This invention. pertains to means for attachincl a f o reservoir v a fi ing one .member to another, as the handle of a beningcl'osed by st pp andiallmg oneed' e" window cleaning implement to the body thereof. of the font or reservoir is apad or .the' like 3. } It was in connection with a device of this kind part of the pad is exposed. to the interior of the 5 that the inventionhadits conception, and I have font or, reservoir so' as to be moistened by iq -5 chosenv to illustrate it in such association for the contained therein. A handle" support A i's atpunposeof the present. disclosure; In fact, in its tached, at onesideitoathe :font o'rreser'volr labymore limited aspect, theinvention may be said having prongs 5 engaged over a peripheral seam toconsist of an improved handle construction 5 f the Vessel, and, at the opposite side, .by 'bolts 1 0 for'such: devices asuthatreferred to. 1 that xtend through a:= part of the support,
The particular window cleaner, in the conthrough the p and through pp flanges struction of which the inventive thought origibetween which the pad is clamped. A squeegee hated, comprises a relatively flat body of sub- 9 is carried by the handle support beyond that stantial length and width, and a. handle disposed de Of the t reservoir pp the D 3- at right angles to the plane of the body. Thus The support 4 is preferably constructed of sheet assembled or constructed, the implement canme and carried by and preferably formed not be boxed or packed to advantage nor stored ntegral with it, is a boss I0 whose inner flared in compact space. By making the handle detachend ll merges into the support 4. The boss I0 able, however, these diiiiculties are overcome. s p d W eileumfelentially paced thread- 2 It is the primary purpose of my invention to ed segments [2. provide simple and inexpensive but thoroughly The a dle proper, which is the pri efiective means for attaching one member to Stit t 0 the be s d gnated I5, and another in an especially facile manner and with the same is prefera y Constructed of a p e of a strong and durable joint, but which can be sheet metal, formed into a cylinder of suitable easily manipulated to disconnect the members, if length a d diamete that 5' Split longitudinally desired. at l6 and flared at one end, as shown at IT, to
Another object of the invention is to provide a fit the tapered d ll of the boss II] when the handle construction i i h k t member latter is inserted into the handle, the handle havis formed of sheet metal with a longitudinal slit ihg SIOtS for the passa e of the threaded along one side so as t b capable of expanding ments 12 of the boss. The diameter of the circle 0 more or 1 t fit h dl extensions or poles of on which the threaded segments l2 are described different diameters, and which is covered by an is sufiiciently greater than the external diameter elastic grip that adjusts itself to the variable of e handle 5 o expose the threads through diameter of id k t; b r, the slots 18 for cooperation with an internally ot objects and advantages 111 appear as I threaded ring or nut [9 that encircles the handle 35 proceed to describe the invention in detail by refd 1S Confined tween the flared end I! thereof erence to the accompanying drawing in which and the adjacent end of an elastic sleeve that Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a window cleanenoases th a r p rt n f th handle an p ing element incorporating the invention; Figs. violes a suitable hand grip ignated 20.

In the present instance, said memthis condition. bers consist of the body and handle, respectively, When using the implement illustrated in Fig. 1 of a window cleaning implement similar to that for cleaning surfaces within convenient arms which constitutes the subject matter of Patent reach, the grip 20 of the handle is grasped direct- N 1,795,249, dated March 3, 1931. The body IV by the hand; but for cleaning surfaces at a 55 greater distance, a handle extension or pole is adapted to have an end, preferably tapered, inserted within the socket provided by the hollow handle 15, the handle being permitted to expand, by virtue of the slit [6, to accommodate the ends of extensions or poles of different diameters. The grip 20, being of rubber or other elastic material, readily adjusts itself to the variable diameter of the handle. Fig. 6 shows the handle l as though expanded over the end portion 22 of a handle extension or pole, and the elastic grip 20 as if it were correspondingly stretched.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination, an entering part consisting of a boss having circumferentially spaced threaded segments, the inner end of the boss being tapered, a receiving part consisting of a sheet metal cylinder having its end flared for engagement with the tapered end of the boss and being slotted for the accommodation of the threaded segments, the threaded portions of said segments being exposed through said slots when the entering part is inserted into the receiving part, a nut encircling the receiving part for cooperation with the threads of the segments, and a member encircling the receiving part and between which and the flared end of the latter part said nut is confined.
2. In combination, an entering part consisting of a boss having circumferentially spaced threaded segments, the inner end of the boss being tapered, a receiving part consisting of a sheet metal cylinder having its end flared for engagement with the tapered end of the boss and being slotted for the accommodation of the threaded segments, the threaded portions of said segments being exposed through said slots when the entering part is inserted into the receiving part, a nut encircling the receiving part for cooperation with thethreads of the segments, and an elastic sleeve encasing the receiving part, said sleeve being in spaced relation to the tapered end of said part and between which and the said tapered end the aforesaid nut is confined.
3. In combination, an entering part consisting of a boss having circumferentially spaced threaded segments, the inner end of the boss being tapered, a receiving part consisting of a longitudinally split sheet metal cylinder having its end flared for engagement with the tapered end of the bossand being slotted for the accommodation of the threaded segments, the threaded portions of said segments being exposed through said slots when the entering part is inserted into the receiving part, a nut encircling the receiving part for cooperation with the threads of the segments, and an elastic sleeve encircling the receiving part.
