To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, WILLIAM E. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips for Fountain-lPens, of which the following is a specification.-
My invention relates to a clip for fountain pens and is designed to provide a simple and effective mode of securing the clip to the pen.
An especially desirable embodiment of my invention is illustrated and described herein. In this embodiment a retaining'clip is secured in place in a safety cap pen of wellknown character which need not be altered in any way to give it the added function of holding the clip in place. It will be understood that the clip may be made and sold separately or as a part of the pen.
My invention therefore consists in the subject-matter herein described, illustrated in the drawing, and set forth in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fountain pen embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a per spective view illustrating the portion of the pen barrel and the parts of the cap separated to make clear their construction. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a safety cap fountain pen embodying my invention, the cap being shown in cross-section.
In the drawing thus described, 1 indicates the barrel of a fountain pen; 2, the pen proper; 3, an abutment surrounding the pen; 4, a removable cap adjustably mounted on the barrel 1, preferably by being screw threaded at 5 to correspond with screw threads 6 on the barrel 1. This cap is provided with a removable and adjustable clamping member 7 having a face 8 op osed to the face 9 on the end of the cap 4. hese faces clamp the clip in a manner whlch Wlll be obvious. The embodiment illustrated (see Fig. 3) shows the clamping member 7 as a plug screwing into the end of the cap 4 and threaded at 10 to correspond with the threads 11 on the cap. The plug 7 terminates in a sleeve 12 adapted to inclose the pen 2 and to have its end in contact w1th the abutment 3 to prevent escape of ink when the pen is not in use. It will be apparent that the plug 7 has successive portrons decreasing in diameter, the outer section being preferably of the same diameter as the end of the cap. Between the face 8 of the clamping member and face 9 of the barrel 4 is located a portion 13 of the clip which bemg interposed between these faces may be firmly clamped in place. The resilient arm 14 of the clip extends at an angle to the retalnlng portion 13 and may be integral with the said portion, the two being stamped out of a single piece of sheet metal or may be brazed thereto as shown. The well-known form of ball clip is illustrated but obviously other forms of clip might be employed. The portion 13 of the clip embraces the clamping member 7 although it need not necessarily completely inclose the same, and is located at a portion of the clamping member of lesser diameter than the portion just beyond 1t being held between the latter and the top of the cap. This interposed part 13 should extend sufficiently around the member 7 so that it can not be accidentally pulled free from the cap, and although as stated it need not completely inclose the member 7, this is the strongest, simplest and best arrangement.
The simplicity of the device is an advantage as is also the fact that it is especially applicable to a class of fountain pens already in use and which do not require alteration to permit of said application.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A removable fountain pen cap having an axially movable clamping member extending outside said cap to be gripped by the fingers for manual control, said cap and clamping member having opposed clamping faces, and a clip having an angularly extending portion interposed between said opposed faces to be clamped between them. I
2. A removable fountain pen cap having a plug screw threaded into one end thereof,
embracing said clamping member and a resilient holding arm carried by said washer and arranged at an angle thereto, said clamping member and cap having opposed clamping faces between which said washer is interposed.
