SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,946, dated July 12, 1892.

Application filed February 24, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, -ALONZO E. WITHERELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor-Strops, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.

The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient construction of razor-strop and holder therefor, by which the razor-strop is firmly held conveniently for use; and it consists in various features of construction in a combined razorstrop and holder and an improved holder for razor-strops, all of which will be fully described in the following specification, and pointed out in the claims.

A detailed description of the construction of my improved razor-strop will now be given, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of my improved razor-strop and holder complete. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are similar sections showing modifications.

Referring to said drawings, a is a block of wood or other suitable material forming the body of the strop; b, cushions on opposite sides of the block a, formed of any suitable material, preferably wool, inclosed within pasteboard covers; 0, strips of cardboard, which are preferably used between the cushions b and the block a, and d the leather cover of the strop. The block a is provided on its opposite side edges with grooves Z, preferably formed in the block, as shown, these grooves being made of suitable form to receive the holder.

The holder 8 consists of a single piece of stout wire bent midway to form a handle and having straight portions sprung into the grooves Z of the strop, the free ends of the holder extending over the end of the strop being secured together, so as to press the strop tightly between them, preferably by a sleeve 2, in which the ends of the holder are se- Serial No. 422,609- (No model.)

cured by compressing the sleeve about the ends or otherwise, all as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The edges of leather cover (:1 may be glued or otherwise secured in one of the grooves Z, and the holder e serves only to stretch the cover tightly by pressing it into the groove on the opposite side of thestrop, as shown in Fig. 3, or the cover. may be loose and applied with overlapping edges to be held within the groove by the pressure of metallic holder 6, as shown in Fig. 4. Cushions Z) and cover d may be used on both sides of the block, as shown, or one side of the block may form a hone-surface. The grooves Z are preferably formed within the block a, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4; but it will be understood that they may be formed in any other suitable manner. Thus in Fig. 5 I have shown a construction in which the block a, has square edges, and the grooves are formed by heavy sheets 3 of pulp-board or other suitable material applied to the block and extending outside its edges, so as to form grooves.

It will be understood that Various other changes in details of construction may be made Without departing from my invention, and I am not to be limited to the exact construction shown.

What I claim is- 1. The combination, with a block having edge grooves, of cushions b on said block, cover d, wrapped about said block and cushions, and wire holder e, pressing the cover into said grooves and forming a handle for the strop at one end, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a block having edge grooves, of cushions b on said block, cover d, wrapped about said block and cushions and having its edges overlapped within one of the grooves, and wire holder 6 in said grooves, securing the overlapping edges of the cover and forming a handle for the strop at one end, substantially as described.
