' tively long cylindrical eraser and by means of which the erasermay be incased, with its outer end exposed and by means of which the eraser as it' wears may be adjusted 1 lengthwise from time totime to expose new for instance thin sheet metal.
outer end surfaces for use; a further object of the invention being to provide the holder with improved means for holding the eraser in adjustedposition and also for affording a grip for the holder to facilitate its use; a further object of the invention being to provide the holder with means for adjustably securing a pencil therein.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings ;Figure 1 is an end elevation, with a portion broken away and in section, of an eraser and pencil holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views of the same taken respectively on the planes indicated by the lines aa and bb of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view, taken on the plane indicated by the line cc of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a tubular body 1, of suitable dimensions, and made of resilient material, such The intermediate portion 2 of the body or holder is hexagonal or of other polygonal form, cross sectionally, to prevent the same from rollin when placed on a desk or the like and the ends 3, 4 of the holder are of somewhat reduced diameter and cylindrical, the cylindrical end 3 being adapted to receive an eraser 5 and the cylindrical end 4 being adapted to receive a'pencil 6.
The cylindrical end 3 is provlded, preferably on opposite sides, with two pairs of spaced longitudinal slits 7 which terminate short of the outer end of the portion 3 and between which slits the material is provided with outwardly extending and longitudinally bowed or rounded ridges 8 where by the tongues or strips 9 formed between said slits are caused to constitute gripping members for engaging the eraser and which are adapted to be flexed inwardly so as to cause them to firmly grip and hold the eraser in place. To facilitate the action of the gripping members of the holder the .peripheral surface of the eraser is preferably milled from end to end as at 10. To thus press the gripping members inwardly and engage them with the eraser, to hold the latter in adjusted position, I provide a cylindrical collar 11 which is adapted to slip over the cylindrical end 3 of the holder and over the ridges 8 and which while pressing the gripping members 9 inwardly is held near the inner end of the portion 3 of the holder by the said ridges 8, which act as cams, as shown( The collar has a centrally located milled annulus 12 to form a grip to facilitate holding the eraser holder in the fingers and also facilitate the use of the same.
The end 4 of the holder has longitudinal slits 13 to provide two resilient oppositely arranged semi-cylindrical jaws 14 between which the pencil 6 is gripped and which enable thev pencil to be adjusted longitudinally from time to time as desired.
It will be evident from the foregoing description and by reference to the drawings that the major portion of the relatively long eraser is incased in the holder, onlythe outer end of the eraser being exposed, and it will be also understood that the eraser may be adjusted from time to time as the same becomes worn by use.
Having thus described my invention I claim An eraser holder having a tubular end portion to receive an eraser and provided with spaced longitudinal slits and ridges between the slits and forming cams, said slits der pressure and caused by the collar to deand ridges terminating short of the end of tachably grip the eraser. v 10 said tubular portion, in combination with a In testimony whereof I aifix my signature collar fitted on said tubular portion and in presence of two witnesses.
5 slidable over the same and said ridges, the WILLIAM E. LANE.
portions of the holder between the slits and Witnesses: provided with the ridges forming gripping R. C. ADAMS,
elements which are adapted to be flexed un- FRED P. BARNETT.
