Application May 11, 1938, Serial No. 207,399
. 7 Claims.
This invention relates to writing implements such as pencils, pens and the like and has special reference to a finger grip attachment for writing implements, v
One important object of the present invention is to provide a novel form of finger grip attachment for the purpose described and which is so constructed as to enable it to be readily applied and removed.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a novel attachment for the purpose set forth and which attachment is in the form of an elastic sleeve having straight slit means opening at both ends of the sleeve and extending substantially through the entire length 'of such sleeve.
A third important object of the invention is to provide such a sleeve having a novel construction including at least one finger. supporting ridge.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide a novel form of elastic or resilient sleeve of this type having a plurality of spaced thick walled portions alternating with thin wall portions thus forming finger stops and also ensuring tight gripping of the sleeve on the writing implement at those points not under the gripping influence of the user's fingers.
A fifth important object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of cushioning means on the interior of such a sleeve.
A sixth important object of the invention is to provide ventilating means for the spaces between the novel cushioning means above mentioned.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil having one form of the sleeve applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of a second form of such a sleeve.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a third form of sleeve.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a fourth form of sleeve.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal diametric section of the fourth form.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a sixth form of sleeve.
Figure 7 is a longitudinal diametric section of the sixth form;
In'the form of the invention shown in Figures '1 and 2 there is provided a sleeve Ill having a smooth'cylindrical' bore H and having its side wall provided'with asli-t l2 extending from end to endof the sleeve. This sleeve has its wall thick at each end and the middle and thinner between the middle and end portions so as to provide a sinuous surface. The thick end portions are shown at I3, the middle portion at M and the intermediate portions at l5.
In the 'form shown in Figure 2 the sleeve has a cylindrical body 16 provided with an enlarged or swollen end portion H. This form of the in- 15 vention has a, smooth cylindrical bore 18 and is provided with a straight slot l9 extending from end to 'end of the sleeve.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 3 there is provided a cylindrical sleeve 20 having a smooth "cylindrical bore 2| and providedwith straight aligned slots 22 extending from each end to a point adjacent the longitudinal center of the sleeve.
'The'body' 23 of the sleeve shown in Figures 4 and 5 is'of the same exterior form as that shown in Figure 1 and has a straight slot 24 extending from end to end of the sleeve. The bore 25 of this sleeve is provided with helical inwardly projecting ribs 26 and 21 so as to resemble a double threaded nut. Also the sleeve is provided with radial perforations 28 opening internally between the ribs.
In Figures 6 and 7 a form is shown the body of which is exteriorly like Figure l and has a similar slot 36. The bore 31 of this form is provided interiorly with annular grooves 38 spaced longitudinally of the bore so as to provide a series of spaced annular ribs 39 between which open radial perforations 40.
It will be seen that the ends of each of these forms are rounded in somewhat segmento-spherical form.
The material of which each form of the invention is made is such as to possess a considerable degree of elasticity or resilency. For instance, the sleeve may be made of rubber, a synthetic resin or other suitable material. The bore, in each case, is of such diameter as to fit closely on the writing implement so that it will resist 60 tendency to slide longitudinally of the implement. At the same time the construction is such, due to the straight slotting of the body, that the sleeve may be loosened from the implement by inserting ones finger nail or a suitable tool, such 55 as a knife blade, in the slot and exerting prying action to force the edges of the slot apart. This is particularly advantageous when the sleeve sticks to the implement as when ink hardens between the sleeve and a pen holder. Also the ribs assist in this freeing action since they lessen the area in contact with the implement and the perforations further assist this action by preventing the formation of partial vacuum between the ribs when it is desired to remove the sleeve.
It is further to be noted that such a one piece sleeve with a straight slot costs less to manufacture than sleeves with irregular slots or without a slot since the present devices can be made in simple dies and with fewer operations.
There has thus been provided a simple and eificient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified. v
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention tothe exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
l. A writing implement attachment consisting of a one piece sleeve having a straight slot extending through its wall and extending from end to end of the sleeveQsaid sleeve having at least one circumferentially enlarged portion forming an abutment for the fingers when grasping the sleeve, said sleeve being provided with a bore and having inwardly extending spaced ribs extending around the bore.
2. A writing implement attachment consisting of a one piece sleeve having a straight slot extending through its wall and extending from end to end of the sleeve, said sleeve being provided with a bore and having inwardly extending spaced ribs, said ribs extending circumferentially and annularly of the bore.
3. A writing implement attachment consisting of a one piece sleeve having a straight slot extending through its wall and extending from end to end of the sleeve, said sleeve having at least one circumferentially enlarged portion forming an abutment for the fingers when grasping the sleeve, said sleeve being provided with a bore and having inwardly extending spaced ribs, said ribs extending circumferentially and annularly of the bore.
4. A writing implement attachment consisting of a one piece sleeve having a straight slot extending through its wall and extending from end to end of the sleeve, said sleeve being provided with a bore and having inwardly extending spaced ribs, said ribs extending helically and in parallel from end to'end of the sleeve.
5. A writing implement attachment consisting of a one piece sleeve having a straight slot extending through its wall and extending from end to end of the sleeve, said sleeve being provided with a bore and having inwardly extending spaced ribs, said ribs extending circumferentially and annularly of the bore, said sleeve having perforations extending through its wall and opening inwardly between said ribs.
6. A writing implement attachment consisting of a one piece sleeve having a straight slot extending through its wall and extending from end to end of the sleeve, said sleeve having at least one circumferentially enlarged portion forming an abutment for the 'fingers when grasping the sleeve, said sleeve being provided with a bore and having inwardly extending spaced ribs, said ribs extending circumferentially and annularly of the bore, said sleeve having perforations extending through its wall and opening inwardly between said ribs.
7. A writing implement attachment consisting of a one piece sleeve having a straight slot extending through its wall and extending from end to end of the sleeve, said sleeve being provided with a bore and having inwardly extending spaced ribs, said ribs extending helically and in parallel from end to end of the sleeve, said sleeve having perforations extending through its wall and opening inwardly between said ribs.
