Their form also is such as to impart to them sufficient strength to prevent them from being deflected or bent, thus assuring the proper retention of the general contour of the grip portion under all conditions of ordinary usage. The ribs are slightly raised above the level of the plain cylindrical unslitted part of the barrel, but expose no sharp edges to the fingers, and the holder is one in which there is a certain provision for ventilation, allowing the passage of air around and between the ribs.

The device is simple, efiicient, desirable, and can be made cheaply and expeditiously.

The invention is of course equally applicable to penholders in which the holder proper of concavo-convexity imparted to the ribs can be varied without departure from the invention. j I

What I claim, and desire tosecure by Let ters Patent, is'

As a new manufacture, a penholder the tu bular grip portion of which consists of a series of longitudinal ribs concavo-convex in cross-section formed in one with the body of the holder and separated lengthwise from each-other by intervening slots, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
