View of the clumps, holding the two' sides ofthe ladder. k
The bottom 'of my ladder is constructed with two side pieces of stndding, of ordinary size, and u length to suitl thewngon, set und bolted on cross-ties, having ateuchenrlpivoted posts, with slots und notches of the ordinary kind, to hold the binding-pole, to secure the gmini or hay when loaded. The bottom is usually t-iglitrtov ret-nin groin, when shelledinhnndlinp; the untlireshed; strnw. j
The two cross-ties above the axles of the wagon, nt A, 2, have notched ends, extended to fit around the standards of the holsters on which the ladder rests, as shown in the drawings, thus 'securely' holding the suine to its position.
At B, fig. 2, on euch of the studding side pieces aihresnid, n-re dowel-pius, to retain to their pinces the posts Got' the sides, figs. 3 und 4.
Rectangular holes nre mede at D, fig. 2, through which to introduce the lower ends of said posts C, of each of scid wings, figs. 3 and 4.
I construct the sides or wings aforesaid as follows:
C C C G, ot'euch of su-id sides, nreposts, the lower ends mitred, so ns to tit together under the bottom, fig. 2, wlieuset through seid holes :it D, fig. 2.
Higher up on scid posts, at E, of euch ot'snid posts, nreholes, to rcocire sri-id dowel-pins nt B, 2.
Above scid holes are :itt-nchod, by unils or bolt-s, the parallel and open sluts of the sides of my ladder.
Neer thenpper ends of sind posts are wooden stuples, nt F, in. which slide the tongues G of the upper sluts H H, ns shown in the drawings.
The tongues ot' each end of said upper slats H H are perforated with graduated holes, ns shown in the drawings.
A hole is also bored in the touter staples F, aforeseid, by which menus said upper slats H may he raised or lowered, to enlarge o': diminish the capacity of the ladders :it pleasure, and the sume is secured by plus inserted in snid holes through the outer tongues und staples aforesaid, as shown inthe drawings.
0n the upper end of the posts, Y:it euch end of said sides, figs. 3 und 4, is a. teuon, on which seid clamps, iig. 5, are set, by ineens of corresponding mortises itt euch end of seid clamps, iig. 5. Y
Suid clnnips nre held still more firmly to their position bypins, nt I, of the piroted posts, shown in fig. 2.
Haring placed the ladder together, ns described, it is held securely to its position by the delicc's aforesaid.
Between the stende-rds of the wagon-holsters und the bottoni of the ladder is suliicient space to carry loosely the binding-pole, ready to he used when nload of hoy or grain `hns been pitched on the ladder, thus obvia-ting the inconvenience of sending to the stortingpoint in n field for the pole, ns required by former methods.
By the use of my device, aforesaid, the' bot-tom is constructed narrow, so as not to interfere with short turning, us in former methods.
By mea-ns of the exteusion-sla=ts, aforesaid, snid ledder may Abe enlarge-dsc as' to be useful Yto farmers und otheis es a. ruck, in which to haul empty bnrrels when gathering and putting up fruit in orchnrdssnnd :di
other occasions of like character.
rntely constructed, said ladder muy be readily token asunder und luid aside, or hung upon pins alongside of a. fnrmers burn, under shelter, thus sawing the room required for the shelter of all former wagon-ladders, which 'are in hulk, and, for that reason, generally left exposed to the weather. p
llVha-t I claim as my invention, und desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is'
