Be it known that I, .Ciunnns F. MoBnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Athens, county of Athens, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Temporary Bookbindings of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for temporarily binding loose sheets of paper, and the like, between covers, the whole being designed to constitute a temporary book and the covers being adapted to break back and open, to permit of access to the temporarily bound sheets.
A further object is to provide a clamping device, designed to fit over one end of a number of loose sheets of paperthe said sheets having been evened on the end receiving the clamping deviceand to be clamped thereon and to thereby constitute a temporary binding which will securely hold the sheets of paper together in book form.
Another object is to provide such a device in a simple, strong, durable and practically inexpensive, construction.
My invention consists of certain details of construction, hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure I shows a perspective view of my device and the temporarily bound book secured therein; Fig. II shows a side elevation view of the same, the upper cover and a portion of the leaves being thrown back; Fig. III shows an enlarged front elevation view of my device and the book clamped therein; Fig. IV shows a detail view, in seotion, of my clamping device and the temporarily bound book secured therein; and, Fig. V shows a detail view, in section, of a portion of the clamping plate I employ.
My clamping device consists of a frame, adapted to fit over the ends of the evened sheets of paper, said frame consisting of an upper plate 10 and a lower plate 11, the said plates being joined at their rear extremities by a member 12. The plates 10 and 11 are designed to be of equal size, and parallel, their length being somewhat greater than the width of the covers, designed to be placed on the book, and the said plates are joined by the member 12 in the manner shown in the drawings. The member 12, is
designed as an evener, for the ends of the covers and leaves when they are projected into my device, for the purpose of being bound. Vertically mounted between the plates 10 and 11, and having their bearings therein, as shown in Fig. IV of the drawings, are two screw threaded shafts, 13 and 111:, rach being provided, on their upper extremities above the plate 10, with means 15 and 16 respectively, for rotating them. The shafts 13 and 14: are mounted, one near each end of the frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 111 of the drawings, and supported between them is a plate 17, said plate being of equal length with the plates 10 and 11, and being provided near each of its ends with screw threaded orifices 18, which are designed to receive and engage the shafts, 13 and 14: respectively. The plate 1.7 is designed to ride up and down on the shafts 13 and 14, and, as the shafts 13 and 14 are similar in every respect, it is obvious that if they are rotated uniformly the plate 17 will be parallel with the plates 10 and 11. However, a slight variation in the uniformity of the rotating of the shafts 13 and 1 1, while it might throw the plate 17 out of the parallel plane with the plates 10 and 11, will do no par ticular harm other than might be occasioned by the binding of the plate between the shafts, and it is obvious that this can be easily and speedily remedied.
The lower cover, of the book to be bound, is comprised of two sections joined together so as to provide a hinge, which is designed to be slightly in advance of the forward edge of the lower plate 11, when the book is engaged by my clamping device, as shown in Fig. 1V, and the upper cover of the book is composed of three sections joined together by a flexible binding, as shown in Fig. IV, in such a manner that the rear hinge will be slightly in advance of the forward edge surface of the plate 17, and the forward hinge will be a short distance in advance of the rear hinge. The purpose of the double break in the upper cover is to pro vide for that portion of the cover, between the two hinges, projecting upwardly, in a vertical plane, or thereabout, so as to project the second hinge above the plate 10, and thus it is obvious the balance of the cover may project rearwardly from the second hinge without any interference from the plate 10.
In practical operation the lower cover is inserted in the clamping device in the manner shown, the rear edge surface of the cover engaging the forward surface of the member 12. The sheets of paper to be temporarily bound are evened, with respect to their rear edges, and placed in my clamping device immediately on top of the lower cover, as shown, and the upper cover is then placed thereon. The shafts 13 and lff are then operated, simultaneously and uniformly, in such a manner as to carry the plate 17 downwardly, until it engages the upper surface of the upper cover of the book and the plate is firmly clamped thereon.
If desired small hand wheels, or any other means, may be used instead of the rotating means 15 and 16, without altering my invention the principal feature of which is to provide a means for rotating the shafts 13 and 14 and to thereby cause a downward or upward movement of the plates 17.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A temporary binder comprising in combination, a U-shaped frame consisting of upper and lower horizontal plates and a rear vertical evenerplate joining said upper and lower plates, threaded shafts loosely and vertically mounted to project through said upper and lower plates near the ends of the latter and parallel to said evenerplate, a traveling follower plate threaded on said shafts and movable thereby, and flexible covers receivable between said shafts and between said upper and lower plates, whereby said evener-plate may serve to straighten said covers and interposed pages and said follower-plate may be clamped upon said covers and interposed pages.
