strasse.
To all whom it may concern:A
Be it known that I, F RANK F. SMITH, a
citizen of the United States, and a residentI ot' Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom- Adjusting Devices, `of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means adapted t0 limit the extent of opening Windows ot' th'e revcrsilile pivoted sash type, and particularly to' automatically closing, fire-proof windows; and it has for its object to simplify such means, and torender the same positive in its action. t
I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a partial front elevation, of a, windowl trame and sash' provided with my improved device. Fig. 2 is a partial view looking toward the jamb viz. in Vthe direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 and showing the sash in opened position.
Similar characters of referencev designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a sash 4frame of the usual sheet-metal construction common to fire-proof windows. In this frame is fitted a sheet-metal sash 11 provided with the usual wiredglass panes. This sash is pivotally secured to the frame 10 by means of the `sasl1-brackets 12, adapted 'lo be secured at euch side ol the inner face ot' the sash, said brackets having trunnions or pivots 13 working in bearings in stopilatesrli and reintorcine lates 15 secured to the traine 10.' The sash 'l1 is so adjusted as to be sell closing by gravit-y, and the winllow is held open in the usual manner b y sonic suitable means such as a chain or the like (not shown).
Pivotally secured to the sash 11, and lusnally to only one side ot' the sash, is a depending. gravity latchpiece 1G whose lower end 'li'l engages. when the said sash has swung open to a predetermined extent.
'with rthe stop 1S of stop-plate 14.-, which 'late is. secured. to, the inne-r face of the Il() shown. Thishlatch-piece 1s iro .ed at its upper end and is pi'voted tol the sash-bracket 12 by means of a pin 19 jfjiurnaled in a bearing 20 through a lug 21 oi' the said sash-bracket. .W

automatically into alinement with thev stop 18 so that when the' sash 11 is swung as in `Fig. 2. toopen the window, said latch-piece gage with the stop 18, the said latch-piece maybe vpivoted by hand to avoid engagement with the stop 18, whereby the said sash may be swung inwardly beyond the limit imposed by said stop, and reversed, as for washing purposes.
It will be noted that the member 1G curves or projects laterally (see Fig. 1) so as to overlie the stop 18, whereas the latter does not project laterally, but on the contrary is kept within the edge of the sash opening of the window trame so that it does not strike the sash and so interfere with its pivoting.
Of course, it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the precise form of sash stop shown, as for example, to the precise laterally-curved pivoted member 16 shown, nor to a sash which on opening swings inwardly at the top as distinguished from swinging inwardly at the bottom, nor to the sash stop with the pivoted memberon the sash and the iixed stop on the frame, because it is apparent that these conditions 'mivht be reversed, also that other changes and modiications could be made which would still be within the spirit of the invention, and therefore it is the intention to cover not only the precise form shown but also any and all equivalent modifications.
1. In a window of the reversible pivoted sash type: a stop secured to the frame of ,said window; and a vertically depending,
(il)A Ainwardly untilY the latch-piece 16 shall, en-
with the stop and being independent of said stop for its Working said gravityk member and stop coming into Contact when the saab has been pivoted partly open thereby preventing its further openingj and said gravity member being pvotable out oi linement with the sto to permit reversal of tbe sash.
3. In com ination With a Window frame having a reversible sash pivoting aboutan intermediate transverse axis, a Sash stop acting between said frame and sash consist ing of a gravity member on'the one acting against a stop on the other, the gravity member being pivotally snpperted'en the one to'gravitate at all times automatically into alinement with the stop and being inde pendent of said stop for its Working., said gravity member and stop coming inte eentact When the sash has been pivetecl partly open thereby preventing its further opening, and said gravit member being pivotable out of alinement Wlth the stop te permit reversal of the sash.
4. In combination with a Window frame having a reversible sash pivoting ab 'ing ef a gravity member on the ene a Y, .1. ein intermediate transverse ariai a li acting between said .trame and sash :f
