I FRANK VCIGTMANN AND SILAS H. POMEROY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WEATHERPROOF WINDOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 654,205, dated July 24, 1900. Application filed February 5, 1900- Serial No. 4,100. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that we, FRANK VOIGTMANN and SILAS H. POMEROY, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVeatherproof Windows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of ourinvention is to provide a window of the transom class, in which the joints will be tight and absolutely rainproof. It is designed particularly for windows of sheet-metal construction.
It consists of details hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of our window from the exterior, with the transom partially open. Fig; 2 is a longitudinal section through the transom, the transom being closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the sash and casing on lines 3 3, Fig. 1, the transom being closed. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the sash on lines 44, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the hinge.
A represents the casing; B, the stationary sash; C, the transom-sash; D, the hinged weather-strip; E, the hinge thereon; F, the spring on the hinge; G, the projecting flange on the upper half of the sash; H, the turnedover flange on the casing, into which the flange G sets; I, the projecting flange on the casing; J, the turned-over flange on the lower half of the sash which fits over the flange I, and K the glass in the sash.
The hinged weather-stripD is formed of V- shaped channel-ironfand is hinged at its upper end to the casing just above the point at which the transom is pivoted. It is provided with a spring F to keep it down snug when the window is closed. It comes down on either side of the flange of sash C and is designed to completely cover the break in the joint between the casing and the sash, which comes at the point of suspension.
On the upper half of the sash is a projecting flange G. This sets into the turned-over flange H on the casing, thereby forming a completely-weatherproof joint when the sash is closed. Similarly on the lower half of the sash a joint is formed with the projecting flange I on the casing settinginto the turned over flange J on the sash. On the lower edge an overlapping beveled joint of the ordinary kind is made.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. In a transom window the herein described weatherproof joint between the sash and the casing, consisting of the projecting flange on the one and the turned-over flange on the other, into which said projecting flange sets; all substantially as shown and described.
2. In a transom-window the herein-described weatherproof joint, consisting of the combination of the sash C, having the projecting flange G on its upper portion and the turned-over flange J on its lower portion, the casing A having the turned-over flange H above the point of suspension of the transom and having the projecting flange I below the point of suspension; all substantially as shown and described.
3. In a transomwindow the herein described weather-strip for closing the joint at the point of suspension, consisting of the strip D hinged to the casing above the point of suspension, and extending down over the open ing between the sash and the casing; all substantially as shown and described.
4:. In a transom-window the herein-described weather-strip for closing the joint, at the point of suspension consisting of the strip D,having the hinge E by which it swings upon the casing, the spring F, by which it is held closely down over the joint between the sash and the casing; allsubstantiall y as shown and described.
