To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Corns S. IIUFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in. the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Canopy Attachment for Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to canopy attachments for hammocks and the like and its object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, can be readily attached to a hammock, and will support a canopy in proper position above a hammock and where it. will notcause discomfort to the occupant of the hammock.

A further object is to provide a device of this character having improved means for fastening it to a hammock.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a hammock having the present improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through one end portion of the cross-bar of the attachment and throu h the clamp carried thereby.

Refhrring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates side strips arranged alon diverging lines and connected at one end y a cross strip 2. Standards 3 are mounted upon the side strips near the other ends thereof and each of the standards has a brace 4 connecting the upper portion thereof with the side strip as shown particularly in Fig. 2. A rod connects the upper ends of the arts 3, the terminal of the rod being exten ed at angles thereto as indicated at (3 and being attached to standards 3 by means of screws, rivets or other suitable fastening devices. An elongated bail 7 formed of light wire is pivotally connected to the side strips 1 near the cross strips 2 as indicated at 8, this bail normally resting upon the cross or supporting strip 5. The said bail 7 may be bowed as indicated in Fig. 2. Secured to each end of each of the side strips 1 is a clip or hammock engaging device preferably in the form of pivotally connected members. The clamping means located at one end of each strip 1 consists of a lever 9 pivotally connected to the cross strip 2 and having a broad bearing space 10 which normally contacts with said strips. A spring 11 is interposed between the lever and the stripso as to hold the bearing face normally in contact with the strip. This bearing face 10 is de signed to bind one or more cords b of the hammock B upon the strip 2 as shown in Fig. 3. The clip located at the other end of the side strip 1 is preferably made up of a relatively fixed clamping member 12 secured upon the side strip 1 and having a spring controlled lever 13 cooperating therewith said lever being similar to the lever 9 hereinbefore described. This clip is designed to engage the side portion of the body of the hammock B as shown in Fig. 1.

In using the device herein described the strip 2 is placed under the cords b of the hammock and the clips upon the side strips are then placed in engagement with the cords and with the side portions of the hammock body as shown in Fig. l. The stand ards 3 will thus project upwardly from the hammock body and inasmuch as they are connected by a rod 5 and which is supported by them above the said body B, the bail 7 resting on the rod 5 will be also supported above the hammock body. A canopy of nettin or the like can be placed upon the bail an will be supported thereby above the person occupying the hammock and will not, therefore cause discomfort.

It will be obvious that the device herein described can be readily attached to'various forms of hammocks and is advantageous not only because of its efficiency but also because of its simple construction and the ease with which it may be attached to a hammock.

It is of course to be understood that other forms of clips than those shown and de scribed may be employed. It is to be understood also t-hat the term side strips is used to indicate any desired form of device which might be used in lieu of the strips shown in the drawing. For example steel wire might be employed as an eflicient substitute. Obviously also various other changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

What is claimed is 1. A canopy attachment for hammocks, l comprising front and rear fastening devices for detachably engaging one side edge of a hammock, similar fastening devices for detachably engaging the opposite edge of said hammock, connections between the fastening devices, and a canopy supporting element mounted upon said connections.

2. A canopy attachment for hammocks, comprising a canopy supporting element, a structure connected to said element, and spaced fastening clips upon said structure for detachably engaging the opposed side edges of a hammock.

3. A canopy attachment for hammocks, including side members, a canopy supporting element secured to said members, and spaced clips connected to each of said members for engaging the side edge of a hammock.

4:. A canopy attachment for hammocks, including side members, spaced clips connected to each member for detachably engaging a side edge of a hammock, a baillike canopy supporting element pivotally connected to said members, and means mounted upon the members for holding said eaese elements at a predetermined angle to the side members.

5. A canopy attachment for hammocks, including side members, spring clips upon each member for engaging the side edge of a hammock, a bail-like canopy supporting element connected to said members, standards upon the side members, and a connection between the standards and constituting a support for the bail-like element.

6. A device of the class described com prising fixedly connected side strips, standards thereon, a cross rod connecting the upper portions of the standards, acanopy supporting bail pivotally connected to the side strips and bearing upon the cross rod and means upon the side strips for detachably engaging opposed portions of a hammock.
