Description

Illlll} I A. HOLSEY. BAG TONGS.
APPLICATION FILED APR.5, 1909.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910.
wuembo'a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR HOLSEY, OF OTTUM'WA, IOWA,ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO OTTO ARMSTRONG, OF OTTUMWA, IOWA.
BAG-TONGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910.
Application filed April 5, 1909. Serial No. 487,989. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR HoLsnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of IVapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Tongs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bag tongs.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by means of which filled bags may be conveniently handled without danger of tearing the bags or injuring the hands.
A further object is to provide a bag handling device of this character which will be simple, strong and durable in construc tion, reliable and efficient in operation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of bag tongs constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the same in open position; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the jaws in closed position. Fig. l is a front elevation of the tongs.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 denotes the tongs which consist of jaw members 2 and 3, each of which is provided with a bail-shaped operating handle 4:. The jaw member 2 is provided with a slot 5 which is engaged by a reduced portion 6 of the jaw member 3. The members of the tongs are assembled or brought together in operative position by inserting the handle portion 4: of the member 3 through the handle portion of the member 2 edgewise and afterward turning the member 3 so that the reduced portion 6 thereof may be engaged with the slot 5 in the member 2 after which said engaged portions are pivotally connected together by a rivet or other suitable fastening device 7 In the inner portions of the tong members between their pivotal connections and their handles are formed oppositely disposed recesses S in which are engaged jaw opening springs 9. On the outer side of the member 2 above its pivotal connection with the member 3 are formed stop lugs 10 which limit the opening movement of the jaws by the springs 9 and prevent the disengagement of the springs from the recesses 8.
The jaw members 2 and 3 are preferably formed with transverse openings 12 to form substantially annular gripping members and on the inner face of the jaw 2 adjacent to the outer edge of its front portion is formed an arc-shaped series of laterally projecting rounded bag holding studs 13, which gradually decrease in size toward the opposite ends of the are and, when the jaws are closed, are adapted to engage a similar series of recesses or depressions 1a formed in the opposite jaw member 3 near the outer edge of the front portion thereof. On the inner faces of the jaw members 2 and 3 near the inner edges thereof are formed a substantially circular series of laterally projecting studs or teats 15 which are considerably smaller than the studs 13 and have their ends rounded to form teeth, which interlock when the jaws are brought together, the teats on one jaw alternating with those on the other. By means of the studs and recesses l3 and 14, and the studs or teats 15, the jaws, when closed upon a bag, will securely grip the same without danger of tearing the fabric, of which the bag is formed. On the outer edges of the jaw member 2 adjacent to its pivotal connection with the jaw member 3 are formed laterally projecting guide lugs 16 which are beveled slightly on their inner sides so that when the jaw members are brought together said lugs will engage the opposite outer edges of the jaw member 3 thereby guiding the jaws in their closing movement so that the studs 13 will aline with and enter the recesses or depressions lt in the jaw member 3.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described what I claim is:
A pair of bag tongs comprising a pair of pivotally connected annular jaws, one of which is provided on its inner face near its outer edge with an arc-shaped series of rounded recesses, said recesses decreasing in size toward the opposite ends of said arc, an arc-shaped series of studs having rounded free ends and arranged near the outer edge of the inner face of the other j aw, said studs decreasing in size toward the opposite my invention i ends of the arc and adapted to engage said recesses when the jaws are closed, and a plurality of teats of smaller size than said studs arranged adjacent the inner edges of said jaws, the teats of one jaw alternating with those of the other to interlock when the jaws are closed, and operating handles formed on said jaws.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 5 nesses.
