PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW JOHNSON, OF EDGEWATER, COLORADO GRAB HOOK Application filed July 27, 1931. Serial No. 553,457.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a tool adapted for the quick handling of lumber, ice and other articles and so constructed that it may be engaged with the article to be handled with aminimum effort on the partof the user; to provide a tool of this character in which the opening and closing movements of the jaws may be eflected with but one hand of the operator or user; and to provide a construction' which is of simple form and, consisting of few parts, is susceptible of cheap manufacture.
With this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the longitudinal axis of the tool andin a plane parallel to that of Figure 1. I
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1.
The jaws which constitute the article gripping elements of the invention are of arcuate form and terminate in the inwardly directed spurs 11 for penetration into the article to be handled, such as lumber, ice or the like. These jaws have a common pivotal mounting 12 at the lower end of a sleeve 14.
and by reason of'being oppositely disposed,
' their shank portions 15 extend in opposite 85 directions laterally from the sleeve and have terminal pivotal connections 16 with links 17 which in turn are pivotallyconnected with radially disposed ears 18 arranged on diametrically opposite sides of a jaw actuating bar 19 which is slidably mounted in the sleeve 1 1 and is provided at its upper end with a hand grip 20. Thesleeve, on diametrically opposite sides and at angular distances 90 degrees from the pivot 12 is formed with longitudinal slots 21, constituting clearance spaces for the ears 18.
The sleeve 14 at its upper end is provided with a laterally extending ear 22 toserve as a finger grip,so that the operator may eflect 7 rocking of the jaws 10 to separate the latter by elevating or lifting the sleeve 14 when the hand is engaged with the grip and a" finger engaged with the ear 22. Closing movement of the aws is effected by a reverse movement imparted to the sleeve, unless the tool be upright when, with the hand engaged with the grip 20 the sleeve, will by gravitation tend to close the jaws.
Obviously any article held between the jaws will begripped the tighter when it is raised by reason of the pull on the sleeve being downwardly and the force tending to close the jaws being increased because of the bar 19 not being permitted to follow the sleeve because of being held or carried by the operator.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A tool of the kind indicated comprising a sleeve, an actuating bar sli'dably mounted in the sleeve, a pair of jaws having a common pivotal connection at the lower end of the sleeve, and operative connections between the bar and the jaws to rock them toward and away fro-1n each other upon relative movement of the sleeve and bar, the bar at its upper end having a hand grip, and the sleeve being provided at its upper end with a lateral ear for finger engagement to effect such relative movement of the sleeve and bar.
2. A tool of the kind indicated comprising a sleeve, a bar slidably mounted in the sleeve, jaws pivotally mounted at the lower end of the sleeve and provided with shanks extending laterally from opposite sides of the sleeve, 8 the bar being provided with diametrically disposed ears, links connecting the aw shanks with said ears, the sleeve being provided with longitudinal slots constituting clearance spaces for the ears, and handengaging members carried by the bar and sleeve respectively at their upper ends. I
In testimonywhereofhe afiixes his signature.
ANDREW JOHNSON.
