IMPROVEMENT m HoLnBAcKron OARRIAGEJI'HILLS;
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, PETER SPOHN VAN WAGNER, of the'township of Saltfleet, in the county of Wentworth, in Canada, have inventeda new and useful Improvement inwhat is called the Holdback for Carriage-Thins, Shafts, or Poles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and 'to the letters of' reference marked thereon.
-Figure 1, A, and Figure 2, A, represent a portion of a thill or shaft, on which is fastened the holdback, by
means of screws or other suitable fastening.
B represents a chamber, made of malleable castiron, or other suitable metalfwhich is secured to the v thill or shaft by screws H H.
0 Ba spring, secured by means of a screw or rivet,-
at one end, and presses on a tumbler, D, which works on a pin, I, backward and forward.
G represents a hook, which projects forward from the-top of the chamber B.
E .is a metal ring, attachedto the breeching-strap F.
The tumbler D rotates on the pin I, and allows the nngE to' have free play both ways, without becoming disarranged.
The spring 0 always keeps the tuuibler closed or open, as the case may be.
The ring E, attached to breeching-strap 1*, 'enters at the hook G, and a slight backward movement fastens it securely, and, when necessary, a forward movement easily releases it.
