Letters Patent No. 79,584, dated Jitly'l, 1868; antedated June 30, 1868;
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-POLES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, JAMES R. MADISON and Mrnnn THOMAS, of Oneida, in the county of Knox, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Poles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents the outer end of an ordinary pole for a vehicle, and to which is secured a ferrule, B, made of metal. Cast upon this ferrule is a hook, G, which is provided with a spring-tongue, D, forming the common snap-hook. One or more of these may be formed upon,
the ferrule.
In the outer end of the ferrule is made a horizontal slot or opening; and in this opening is pivoted a ball,
- or its equivalent, G, a: being the pivot which attaches it.
E represents the neck-yoke, which may be made in any of the known and usual ways. i
H represents a bolt, which passes through the centreof the neck-yoke, and into the ball G, securing the yoke firmly.
By this mode of connection, the yoke is susceptible of several motions, it horizontal motion from the ball G, and a vertical motion from the bolt II.
What we claim is-- I 1. Connecting the neck-yoke E to the ferrule by means of the bolt H and the ball G, substantially as and for the purpose set'forth. I
2. The combination of the ferrule B, with its hook C, yoke E, ball G, and nut H, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. v
