SWEAT-BAND.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANOISOUS J OHANN LAUERMANN, a citizen of the United States,

and a resident of Jamestown, in the county of Stutsman and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Sweat- Band, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a sweat band for hats, adapted to secure the hat by engaging impingement of the head in intermittent areas; to provide a sweat band adapted to carry a medicinal ingredient or perfume; to provide a sweat band adapted to facilitate ventilation of the head above the hat; and to provide a construction which is simple, durable and economical.

One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a pictorial illustration show ing in vertical longitudinal section a hat provided with a sweat band constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of a fragment of a sweat band constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the sweat band, showing a modified construction thereof.

An improved method of treating the scalp for dandruff and falling hair is that of causing in the body of the hat the exhalation of some suitable medicinal compound. It is for this purpose that I provide a pad 5. The pad 5 is secured between two leather strips 6 and 7. The leather strips are sewed at the upper and lower edges, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The inner strip 7 is provided with openings or spaces 8, 8 arranged to produce intervening areas 9, 9 in the completed sweat band, having the full thickness of the two leather strips 6 and 7 and the interposed pad 5. The pad 5 is likewise cut away in the spaces 8, leaving recesses or spaces depressed below the outer surface of the inner strip 7 There is thus formed between the spaces 8, 8 holding or gripping areas 9, 9, which, when the hat is drawn upon the head, grip the hair and forehead sufficiently tight to hold the hat. securely holding the hat upon the head, the circulation of the blood passing to the scalp is unimpeded, there being no continuous ring surrounding the scalp, as in the present construction.

The spaces 8, 8 are preferably formed in the shape shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, which is a segment of a circle. WVhether using the particular shape as shown, or other shape, the lower edge of the space is not crossed by the inner leather strip 7. The

spaces 8, 8 extend above the median line of the sweat band, and thereby form passages for the circulation of air about the head, connecting with the air and the upper inclosed portion of the hat.

After the sweat band is constructed by joining the strips 6 and 7 with the interposed pad 5 between, a series of perforations 10, 10 are punctured through the entire band. These perforations 10, 10 communicate directly through the straw of the hat (if the hat be so constructed) with the outside air, and form in this manner a more or less free ventilation for the hat above the head. If desired, the hat may be likewise punctured to aline with the perforations 10, 10.

In attaching the leather strip 7 upon the leather strip 6, the lower edge 11 of the strip 7 is preferably upturned to interpose between the pad 5 and the strip 6, and is there sewed. The strip 7 is then turned over the pad 5 and secured to the same and to the strip 6 at the upper edge by being sewed at 12. A line of stitching l3, 13 is then run around the spaces 8, 8. In this manner there is formed at the lower edge of the areas 9 a lower rounded edge 14. The edge 14: being thus formed is soft and pliable, therefore agreeable in feeling to the head of the wearer. In Fig. 4 is shown a modification of this construction, wherein the strip 6 is provided with a doubled or inner section 15. The inner section 15 is provided to give body to the sweat band and aid in holding the same in shape.

The pad 5 is of any suitable absorbent material, that illustrated in the drawings being a soft padding felt. The pad is provided with the medicinal compound desired by injecting the same through the perforations 10, 10. When the medicinal compound is thus introduced the pad will absorb the same until it becomes permeated therewith. In the majority of instances the compounds thus used are volatile in character, and in operation with the present invention, they would exude under the influence of the heat imparted by the scalp of the wearer of the hat. The exhalations of the compound escape from the leather and pass over and into contact with the scalp of the wearer of the hat. What is here stated with regard to medicinal compounds is equally true of certain forms of perfume, which may be used in the same manner as above described for the use of the medicinal compounds.

\Yhile I have described the employment of the perforations l0, 10, I do not wish to confine myself to their use, as it is obvious that a sweat band advantageous in many respects may be employed without puncturing the strips as at 10, the absorptive and effusive quality of the pad adapting itself to the re ception and discharge of the medicinal compound or perfume above described.

The sweat band is secured to the hat structure preferably through the single layer of leather 6 where the same is exposed in the spaces 8, 8. It may also be secured, if desired, at the top through the extended edge of the single layer, or to the doubled material shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A sweat band, comprising a continuous thin strip adapted to be secured in position upon the hat structure; a second strip secured to the first strip and having separated depended extensions to bear against the head of the wearer and to form the inner surface of said band, the lower edge of said strip being sewed and subsequently folded to produce a rounded lower edge for said band; and a pad interposed between said strips in separated disposition to produce alternate holding and non-holding areas, said strips and pads having a series of punctures to form ventilation apertures for the head.

2. A sweat-band comprising a continuous thin strip of even width adapted to be secured in position upon the hat structure; a second strip secured to the first mentioned strip to form the inner surface ofsaid band, the lower portion of said second strip being cut away to form a series of depended extensions separated by spaces extending from the lower edge of said band to near the top thereof; and a pad of yielding material formed to a shape corresponding to said second strip and interposed between and secured to said strips.

3. A sweatband comprising a continuous thin strip of even width adapted to be secured in position upon the hat structure; a second strip secured to the first mentioned strip to form the inner surface of said band, the lower portion of said second strip being cut away to form a series of depended extensions separated by spaces extending from the lower edge of said band to near the top thereof, the lower edge of said depended extensions being sewed to said first mentioned strip and subsequently folded to produce a rounded lower edge for said band; and a pad of yielding material formed to a shape corresponding to said second strip and interposed between and secured to said strips, said strips and pad being united by sewing therethrough around the edge of the depended extensions of said second mentioned strip and said pad.
