SWEAT-BAND FOR HATS.

Bands for Hats, of which the following is aspecification.

This invention relates to the inner bands of hats that engage the head of the wearer, that are usually known as sweat bands.

The object of the present invention is to provide a' band to be covered with a removable material, that can be readily renewed by the wearer and at a comparatively small cost and with little trouble; or else a new band substituted.

A. further object of the invention is to provide a sweat band having a simple form of mechanical fastening at one or two places that can be easily removed by the wearer and a new one substituted easily and quickly, without resorting to the usual method of stitching the band in place.

In the accompanying drawings representing embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 is a transverse section through a hat showing the band in position. Fig. 2 shows the band,

removed from the hat. Fig. 3 shows a method of covering the rigid band. Fig. 4 shows a section of a modified form of fastening means for the band. Fig. 5 is a detail of the arrangement shown in Fig. 4.

Heretofore, the sweat bands have been made of a soft flexible material, preferably a thin strip of leather or the like, that was sewed at its lower edge to the hat. Obviously, after the hat has been worn a short time, it absorbs perspiration from the forehead and head, and also becomes saturated with oil or grease that is always found in the hair. From this, it follows that the sweat band becomes quickly contaminated and is very unhealthy for the wearer. Of course, a new sweat band could be substituted, but this must be very carefully secured in place by stitching along the lower edge, and the band must be carefully formed and shaped; both of which make the renewal of the sweat band comparatively costly. Furthermore, it frequently happens that the sweat band becomes so supersaturated with oily matter that it soaks through into the Specification of Letters Patent.

To overcome these objections is the purpose of the present invention, wherein a' sweat band is provided that is very easily removble and the substitution of another band or a newly covered band, can be quickly effected, and at a comparatively small cost. The device comprises essentially a comparatively stiff and rigid frame that is provided with a' suitable covering preferably of comparatively soft material that will be comfortable to the wearer. And simple and cheap means are provided for securing this covered frame member in the hat, by which it can be easily and quickly removed, and another substituted therefor; or else the frame member can be recovered, at a still less cost. The frame member is shown in Fig. 2 as formed of a practically continuous annular band 12, that may be formed of a very thin sheet material, such as aluminum, celluloid, fiber,

hard rubber or whalebone for lightness. The ends, if the band is not continuous, are secured to form an even joint, preferably by soldering or electric welding. The band is preferably secured in position by one or more rivets or the like. In Fig. 2 the band is shown provided with two extensions 13 provided with holes 14. When the band is placed in the hat suitable rivets 15 are passed through these holes and through the hat. These rivets are preferably in the form of eyelets, such as are frequently used to give ventilation in the hat. Obviously, the band may be riveted at other places, or if pre ferred at one place only.

The band is preferably covered with some suitable material, preferably some soft substance such as leather or fabric. In Fig. 3, the band is shown as wrapped spirally with a strip 18 of suitable material. Obviously when this lining becomes soiled, it can be unwound and a new one easily and quickly substituted. The band is readily removed from the hat by severing or loosening the rivets or bolts, and as easily returned to position with a new lining. To facilitate the securing of the ends of the band, the extensions 13 are provided with openings 19 at the lower edge of which are provided prongs 20 that engage the band 18 and prevent its unwinding.
