MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1910.
Application fi1ei1 August 31, 1909. Serial No. 515,496.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID B. Mronin, a citizen of Canada, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State'of Ill1no1s, have invented a new and Improved Mattress, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to mattresses, and more particularly to a mattress which is provided with transverse bracing or stlflfemng members, and bands encircling themattress and secured to the ends of the bracing members.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, simple and serviceable in construction, which has means whereby it can be rendered more rigid than the ordinary mattress, and therefore can be more easily handled, and which further has flexible bands encompassin it, these bands serving to prevent the fil ing from compressing at certain points, as well as afiording grips, so that the mattress can be more easily turned over by hand.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mattress; Fig. 2 is a transverse section, on the line 22 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view, having a ortion broken away, and showing the en of one of the bracing members extending through the side of the mattress and securing one of the bands in place.
Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it should be understood that it is quite necessary to turn mattresses fromv time to time, and that the ordinary mattress, as constructed, is ver difficult to handle on account of its flexibility. I have therefore, as before described, provided bracing members adapted to extend transversely of a mattress and to project through the sides thereof, and encompassing bands adapted to be secured to the ends of the bracing members. As a result, my mattresses are rendered more rigid, and may be easily turned without their folding. It should also be understood that the encircling bands may be constructed of any suitable material, such as ticking, leather, string or the like, and that these members afford a grip so that the mattress may be easily handled when it is necessary that it be turned over.
Inthc specific form shown in the drawings, I provide a mattress body 1 of ordinary form, as, for instance, is shown in Fig. l of the drawings. Extending transversely of the interior of the mattress are bracing members or rods 2, of any suitable material, such as spring steel iron, brass or the like. These braces have their ends 3 reduced and adapted to pass through openings 4 in the sides 5 of the mattress. The extremities 6 of the ends 3 are constricted, and are adapted to form rivet heads 7. I have also provided flexible bands 8, of ticking or the like, which encompass the mattress and which are provided with openings 9 adapted to receive the ends 3 of the bracing members. To prevent the sides of the mattress and the bands from becoming torn at the ends of the bracing members, I have employed two plates 10 and 11 respectively, these plates being located one on each side of the bands and sides of the mattress. To secure the latter firmly in place, caps 12, preferably conical in form, and having rims 13, are used. The caps are provided with openings 14 adapted to receive the extremities 6 of the bracing members so that the rims 13 abut-against the outer plates 11, as
shown most clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings. When the caps are in place, the extremities 6 are hammered down, so that the rivet heads 7, which are thus formed, hold the caps firmly in place, which in turn, secure the bracing members to the sides of the mattress.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a body, bracing members extending across the interior of said body, and flexible means encircling said body and secured to said bracing members at the ends thereof.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a body, bracin members extending transversely of said bo y, and flexible bands encompassing said body and secured to the ends of said bracing members.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a body, bracing members extending transversely of the interior of said body, said members having their ends reduced and rojecting beyond the sides of said body exible bands encompassing said body, and
means for securing said bands to the ends of said bracing members.
4. A device of the class described, comprising a body, bracing members extending transversely of said body and having their ends reduced and projecting beyond the sides of said body, the extremities of the ends of said bracing members being constricted, flexible bands adapted to encompass said body and having openings adapted to receive the ends of said bracing members, plates arranged at the ends of said bracing members and adapted to hold between them the sides of the body and the bands, and caps adapted to receive the extremities of the ends of the bracing members, said caps, when said extremities are riveted, serving to secure the bracing members between the sides of the body.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID B. MICI-IIE.
