To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. LINDE- MEYER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Stapleton, Staten Island, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Spring-Attach ng Devices, of which the following is aspeclfication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to means for securing a. bed or mattress spring to a bedstead or frame; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device or devices of this class and for this purpose by means of which an ordinary bed or mattress spring may be quickly and easily secured to a bedstead or frame, and at the same time placed and securely held under tension.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a bedstead provided with a bed or mattress spring and showing my improvement, Fig. 2 a plan View thereof on an enlarged scale and showing a modification, Fig. 3 a View similar to Fig. l but on an enlarged scale, and showing only one endof the bed or mattress spring, and showing my improvement with part of the construction broken away and part in section, and ;Fig. 4 a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 3.

In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown an ordinary bedstead comprising end members a and side rails a and I have also shown a bed or mattress spring comprising a body portion b of spring wire secured to transverse end bars or members 6 The body portion 6 of the bed or mattress spring may be of any preferred construction, but in the accompanying drawing is shown as consisting only of longitudinally arranged and spirally or otherwise curved wires. The particular construction of the body portion of the bed or mattress spring, however, forms no part of my invention, all that is necessary in this connection being that the said bed or mat-tress spring be provided with transverse end members or bars 25 In the practice of my invention as shown in Fig. l, I secure to the side rails 64 of the bed frame and adjacent to the opposite ends thereof longitudinally arranged keepers c which are preferably triangular in form, the outer end portions thereof being higher than the inner end portions thereof in the form of construction shown, and these keepers are provided, in the form of construction shown, with transverse pins 0 I also secure to the ends of the transverse bars or members 6 of the bed or mattress spring arms cl which range downwardly and backwardly, or toward the central portion of the bed or mattress spring, and which are provided in their ends with recesses 03 adapted to receive the transverse pins 0 of the keepers c, and the arms (5 are provided at their outer ends, in the form of construction shown, with inwardly directed flanges (Z by means of which said arms are secured to the transverse bars or members 5 of the bed or mattress spring, screws or bolts d being employed for this purpose.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen, that the arms d are rigidly secured to the transverse bars or members 6 of the bed or mattress frame, and my invention is not limited to the exact means herein shown and described for making this connection, and said arms (Z may be secured to the parts 6 in any desired manner. It will also be seen that the keepers c, in the form of construction shown, are composed of two side members between which the arms (Z are free to swing, and in connecting the bed or mattress spring with the keepers c, the ends of the arms (Z are closed on the pins 0 with said arms in a raised position as indicated in Fig. 3, after which the transverse members 6 of the bed or mattress spring are forced downwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and pins 6 are passed through the upper outer portions of the keepers c and through the arms cl, said keepers and arms being provided with transverse holes or apertures for this purpose. The pins 0 are provided with heads 6 by means of which they may be conveniently manipulated, and the above operation of attaching the bed or mattress spring to the bed frame in this manner results in putting the body or spring portions 6 of the bed or mat-tress spring under tension as will be readily understood, and said bed or mattress spring will be securely held in position but may be detached from the bedstead or frame at any time by removing the pins 6.

In Fig. l of the accompanying drawing, my improved bed or mattress spring, or attaching device or devices are shown as applied to both ends of the bedstead or frame and to both ends of the bed or mattress spring, but in Fig. 2 1 have shown a modification in which said attaching devices are employed only at one end of the bedstead or frame and at one end of the bed or mattress spring, the opposite end of said bed or mattress spring being connected with the side rails of the bedstead or frame by means of hooks or similar devices 9 secured to the rails a and eye bolts or similar devices g secured to the corresponding transverse mem ber b of the bed or mattress spring, but this connection of one end of the bed or mattress spring with the bed spring or frame when my improved attaching devices are employed at but one end of said bed or mattress spring may be made in any desired manner.

By making a bed or mattress spring in the manner described, so that it comprises a spring bed portion and transverse end members only, and detachably connecting the same with the bedstead or frame, the bed or mattress spring may be taken off and compactly rolled up for shipping or other purposes when desired and it may also be again quickly and easily applied to the bedstead or frame.

It will be observed that the attaching devices for the bed or mattress, as herein shown and described, consists of two parts only, one of which is secured to the bed or mattress spring and the other to the rails of the bedstead or frame, and one of which, that which is secured to the bed or mattress spring forms and operates in the manner of a lever, the other part or that which is secured to the bedstead or frame constituting the fulcrum of the lever. It will also be seen that the method of connecting the arms or levers d with the pins or fulcrum members 0 of the keepers 0 forms a pivot on which said arms d are free to turn or swing, and this pivotal connection may also be made in other ways; and other changes in and modifications of the construction of my improvement herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The herein described means for connecting an end of a bed or mattress spring with a bedstead or frame, said bed or mattress spring being provided with transverse end members, consisting of keepers adapted to be secured to the tops of the side rails of the bedstead or frame adjacent to one end and ranging longitudinally of said rails and provided with parallel side plates, arms secured at one end to a transverse end member of the bed or mattress spring, means for pivoting the free ends of said arms in said keepers so that said arms may swing invertical planes, and means for securing said arms in said keepers when said arms are in their depressed position, consisting of pins adapted to be passed through the side plates of said keepers and through said arms.

2. The herein described means for connecting an end of a bed or mattress spring with a bedstead or frame, said bed or mattress spring being provided with transverse end members, consisting of keepers adapted to be secured to the tops of the side rails of the bedstead or frame adjacent to one end thereof and ranging longitudinally thereof and provided with parallel side plates, arms secured at one end to a transverse end member of the bed or mattress spring and provided at their free ends with notches or recesses, and pivot pins mounted in said keepers and adapted to enter said notches or re cesses whereby said arms are adapted to swing in vertical planes, and means for securing said arms in a depressed position in said keepers, consisting of pins adapted to be passed through the side plates of said keepers and through said arms.
