BED-SPRING SUFPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
Application filed March 28. 1907- Seriallfo. 365.038.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDW'ARD RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Spring Supports; and I do declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description 0% the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bed-spring supports, which reinforce the bed-spring fabric to prevent the same from sagging, and which are capable of adjustment so that the said supports may be put under any required tension and may be relieved of tension when the bed is in storage and not in use so as to avoid springing or warpin the frame, and which when in use may be adjusted to suit the unequal weight of two persons occupying the same bed, and my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of a spring bed bottom provided with adjustable supports embod 'ing my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudina sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of a modified form of the tension and adjusting devices for the supporting reinforcing wire; and Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are detail elevations of modified forms of the tension springs used in connection with such wires.
The frame of the bed s ring is indicated at 1 and the bed bottom fa bric, which may be of any suitable construction, is indicated at 2. In accordance with my invention, I provide a suitable number of longitudinally-disposed supporting reinforcing wires 3, each of which has a hook 3 formed at one end, and has its opposite end screw-threaded. The same are here shown as having their major portions run through the bed sprin ined downwardly therefrom. To the opposite ends of the frame 1 are attached hooks 4, each of which has a bill 5 at its outer end inserted in an opening in one end of the frame and'also has a reversely-disposedbill tons of the said hooks rest on the upper sides 0 the cross bars which form the ends of th e The intermediate por-' tached to tension and adusting devices 8,
each of which is compose of a plurality of angle link-members 9. In the form of myinvention shown in Fig. 1, each tension and adjusting device has a pain of said angle link members pivotally connected together, as at 10, one of said members being pivotally connected to the bar 7, and the other beingattached to the bill 6 of one 'of the hooks 4. An adjusting screw 11 passes through openings in the said angle links and is provided at one end with an adjusting nut 12. Springs 13 coact with the said link members and the said adjusting screws to normally draw the said link members toward each other to apply tension to the wires 3. The said springs are here shown as coiled springs mounted on the ends of the said screws, one of said springs bearing between the head of one of the screws and one of the link members 9,
the other spring bearing between the other link member and the adjusting nut.
The op osite end of each wire 3 passes through t e down-turned, bent portion 14 of a tension yoke 15,'Which is U-shaped and made of a single piece of wire. On thesaid end of the said wire 3 is screwed an adjusting nut 16. Washers 17 are placed on said wire, one of which bears against said nut 16, the other bearing against the down-turned portion 14 of the tension yoke. A coile'd spring 18 on the said end of the wire 3 bears between the said washers. Said tension yoke is attached to a tension spring 19, which may be of any suitable form, various forms of said apring being shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
he said tension spring is formed with a plurality of s ring coils 20: nd is connected to the end 0 the frame opposite that to which the tension and adjusting devices 8 are connected by being attached toone of the hooks 4. It will be understood that by turning the nuts 12, 16 to vary the tension of the springs '13, 18 and 19, the wires 3 may be put' under In the modified form of tension adjusting device shown in Fig.3, said device has two quired shape and also bent to form a plural-,
ity of spring coils 20. between which the stress is distributed, and the ends of which merge inlink or arm portions 22, which connect said coils together and move angularly with refer,- ence' to one another under variations of the stress exerted on the spring. Such provision of a plurality-of .coils and of angularly 'mov able vcoil-connecting portions renders such springs extremely strong and flexible. In
eachof the forms of the spring shown in Figs.
5, 6 and {,theends of thewire of which the sp g is made are directly connected together, as show'n at 23."
the wire ofwhioh it is com osed is bent to form two op ositely-exten ing arms 24.,- in the 'outer'en of each ofwhich is a relatively large coil 20. The connecting portions be- .tween said arms include a relatively small plate 27, whic 'understo rei orc' supporting wires 3.
' While have herein described my invention as applicable .to a bed spring, vit will'be e that the same may beused in connection with s rings for other articles of furniture. 'It be observed by.reference to the drawings that my improved tension and adjusting. devices are disposed under the The end portions 25 of said spring emcee tion will be readily understood without re.
quiring' a more extended explanation. Various changes in the form, proportlon,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without-departing from the principleorsacrificing aigff the advantages of] the invention, as d claims. v Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettGIfPB,tGI I1J -IS, v
V 1. In combination with a bed or the like spring fabric anda frame, onwhich the sameed. bythe'appended is stretched, a supporting reinforcing wire v v for the spring fabric, attached to the 'frame, In the form of the spring shown in Fig. 4,
and,a'ten sion and adjusting device for said wireyconnected thereto and to the frame and 1 having .pivotally connected anglelinks, an. adjusting screw connecting said links, and
springs coacting with said screw and links to exert tens on-on said wire.
-2. In a structure of the cIass described, a
spring for the purpose set forth, made of a s ngle wire bent to form oppositely-extending arms, spring coils atthe outer ends of said arms, a connecting portion betweensaid arms having a centrally disposed s ring coil, and 5 terminal parallel portions, an a spring plate connecting the ends-ofsaid parallel ortions.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
EDWARD RYAN.
