Description

Patented May I6, 1899.
B. R. SPUOHE. END POST AND BRAGE FOB WIRE FENCES.
(Application filed Aug. 30, 1898.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RANSOM R. SPOORE, OF NEWARK, NEIV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH M. RAUB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
END POST AND BRACE FOR WIRE FENCES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 625,278, dated May 16, 1899. Application filed August 30,1898. Serial No. 689,836. (No modeL) To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RANSOM R. SPOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of IVayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End Posts and Braces for 'Wire Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in end posts for wire fences and means for inclining said posts in order to increase or diminish the strain on the wires extending between the posts.
The object of my said invention is to regulate the strain on the wires by the inclination of the main post at one end of the panel, as will be more fully shown in the specification, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of the panel posts and braces in position. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the spanner or brace with its connections. Fig. 3 shows the main post, brace, and adjusting-bolt, parts being broken away. Figs. 4, 5, and (5 are detail views.
A is a metallic end or main post formed of iron or steel plate bent at a right angle and provided with notches a to receive the upper end of the spanner or channel-brace B, which is semicylindrical or channeled in form, havin g suitable slots 1) and b to receive the posts, and at its lower end abuts against the opposite short semicylindrical or channeled post 0, and D is a curved bolt passing through post A and brace B and adjustable therewith by means of the nut 'E. Near the ground the posts A and O are connected by a tension-rod F, having a screw-threaded extremity provided with the ad justing-nut G. These parts A and C have at their lower ends angular projections a and c, forming a foot or base to insure a solid foundation when they enter the ground. As the wires which extend between the post A and the corresponding post at the end of the panel are expanded or contracted by changes of temperature the slack is taken up by changing the position of the nut E on the curved bolt D, (and the nut G on the tension-rod F,) and thus at all times the wires are retained in a taut position. Each post A is provided with a series of notches a to re ceive wires which extend from one post A to the corresponding one at the end of the panel, (not shown herein,) the series of wires being looped around each post A, and may be continued indefinitely. Avertical plate 11 is secured usually by a bent clip near the lower end of each post A, and being embedded in the ground prevents the post from turning in its seat, thus serving as an anchor.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The angular post A, having the notches a,.
a 12 therein, tongues a formed integral with the post at its lower end and bent in opposite directions, plate H having slots, clips passed through said slots and bent in opposite directions, whereby the plate is secured to the post near its lower end, curved adjusting-bar D, secured to the post near its upper end and connecting therewith the upper end of the channeled brace B in combination with said brace B, tension-rod F, and short auxiliary channeled post 0, the post C, having tongues a formed integral with the same at its lower end, the upper end of the post 0, engaging the lower slotted end of the brace B, the bar D, and tension-rod F, being provided with nuts E, and G, respectively for adjusting the brace and rod, all arranged and operated substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
