v SHELF SUPPORT.

H E5 5 E E 1 UNITED s'rA'rEs PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID E. HUNTER, or CAMBR DGE, nsssacnusn'rrs, ASSiGNOR TO LIBRARY BUREAU,
OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A.
CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHELF-SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID E. HUNTER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and resident of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shelf-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shelf supports for museum cabinets or cases and similar structures and consists in the structural improvements hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment of my invention,- Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross'section of the corner of a cabinet or case containing my improved shelf support; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the hanger column and one of the hangers or brackets supported thereby; and Fig. 3 is a. front elevation of said hanger column and one of the hangers or brackets supported thereby.
T have shown the invention as applied to thecorner of a cabinet or case comprising a plurality of panel members, provided at their edges with channeled margin pieces, the margin pieces of adjacent panels being secured together. Referring to Fig. 1, two such channeled margin pieces are shown at A, each having a beveled face a to make a corner joint with the other. Panel members B are secured at their edges within the chan nels of the margin pieces, where they are held by any suitable form of packing stripsv b. In the corner of the cabinet thus formed is a hanger column having means to engage and support hangers or brackets at several elevations or stations thereon. The hanger column consists of a sheet metal channel bar G, one flange of which is inturned as shown at 0 to abut as a leg against one of the margin pieces A, and the other flange of which extends beyond theedge of the other channeled margin piece and into the channel between the panel member B and the flange of the channeled margin piece as shown at 0' and thence is turned outwardly as shown at c to extend between the ed e of the panel member and the bottom 0 the channel of the margin piece. Thus the hanger column is held in place without other fastening means than its own flanges. Arranged at intervals along the hanger column are a plurality of slots 0,

by which the shelf supporting brackets may be held at various stations or elevations. I
The shelf supporting brackets or hangers each consists of the supporting arm D carrying a horizontal ledge d, provided with a cap or pad d of leather or other suitable material to afford a slightly resilient and soft bed for the shelf, a toe part d extending upwardly and adapted to pass through the slot 0 and engage the inner surfacevof the hanger column above the slot, and the heel part cl adapted to engage the outer surface of the hanger column below the slot. r-The shoulder cl prevents the bracket from slipping downward and the bracket is held firmly locked in position by its own weight andlthat of the load supported by it. To remove the ban er or bracket, the front end of arm D is li ted until the shoulder (i is clear of thelower edge of the slot, whereupon the toe part d may be withdrawn from the slot. A pair of shoulders (1 extending back from the ledge (Z engage the outer surface of the hanger column and prevent lateral movement of the hanger.
Iclaim: p
1. The combination in a cabinet or case, of a channeled margin piece, a panel member with an edge secured in the channel of the mar 'n piece, a hanger column provided with a fa nge, the panelmember and a flange of the channeled margin piece and there held under compression, means comprised in the hanger column to engage hangers or brackets at several stations thereon, and a hanger or bracket removably engaging said means the hanger column to engage hangers or ban or or bracketremovably engaging said per orations, adapted to support a shelf.
3. The combination in a cabinet or case, of a channeled margin piece, a panel member with an edge secured in the channel of the margin piece, a hanger column consistbrackets at several stations thereon, and a ing of a sheet metal channel bar, one flange thereof extending between the panel memr ber and a flange of the channeled margin piece and there held ,under compression, meanscomprised in the hanger column to engage hangers or brackets at several stations thereon, and a hanger or bracket removably engaging said means adapted to support a shelf.
4. The combination in a cabinet or case, of a channel margin piece, a panel member with an edge secured in the channel of the margin piece, a hanger column consisting of a sheet metal channel bar, one flange thereof extending between the panel member and a flange of the channeled margin piece and there held under compression, the exposed web of the hanger column perforated to engage hangers or brackets at several stations thereon, and a hanger or bracket removably to engage such perforations, adapted to support a shelf.
5. The combination ina cabinet or case of a channeled margin piece, a panel member with an edge secured in the channeled margin piece, a hanger column consisting of a channel bar, one flange thereof extending between the panel member and a flangeof the channeled margin piece, and a compressible packing strip between said panel and said flange of the hanger column.
6. The combination in a cabinet or case, of a channeled margin piece, a panel member with an .edge secured in the channeled margin piece, and a hanger column having a flange extending between the panel member and a flange of the channeled margin piece, said flange so held between the panel and the margin piece constituting the sole securement of said hanger column in the cabinet or case.
7. The combination with the corner of a cabinet orcase, comprising a channeled marof the cabinet or case, an
teases gin piece, and a panehmembr with an edge secured in the channel of the margin piece,
of a hanger column at the corner of said cabinet or case consistin of a sheet metal channel bar, one flange 0 which is inturned and abuts as a leg against one wall of the cabinet or case, and the other flange of which extends between the panel member and a flange of the channeled margin piece and is outwardly turned to exten between the .edge of the panel member and the bottom ofthe channeled margin piece, means comprised 1n the hanger column to engage hangers or brackets at several stations there- 'on, and a hanger or bracket removably en- .said cabinet or case consisting of a sheet metal channel bar,
one flange of which is inturned and abuts as a le against one wall the other flange of which extends between the panel member and a flange of the channeled margin piece and is outwardly turned to extend between the edge of the panel member and the bottom of the channeled margin piece, the exposed web of the hanger column perforated to engage hangers or brackets at several stations thereon, and a hanger or bracket removably engaging such perforations adapted to support a shelf.
