F igf 10 is a sectional plan view of the joint connecting two show cases with each other.
The improved show case in 1ts.general construction consists of a base 10. a lower compartment 11 and an upper or shelf compartment 12 set on top of the lower compartment 11. The base 10 is in the form of a hollow box-like structure, open at the top and; bottom and comprising a sheet metal front 15, a sheet metal back 16 (see Fig. 3) and sheet metal sides 17' (see Fig. 8). I The front, back and sides of the base 10 are provided with inwardly turned flanges 18,19 and 20 for supporting the base on a floor or other s'uitable support, and to the front 15 and the sides 17 are fastened slabs 25, 25 of marble or other suit-able material,
preferably bythe use of bolts 2'7, as plainly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
The upper ends of the front 15, back 16 and sides 17 are provided with inwardly turned flanges 30, 31 and 32, andon the flanges 31 and 32 rests the bottom-4:0 of the lower compartment 11 and which. bottom forms the top for the base 10. A bottom plate 11 overlies the front flange 30 and, this bottom plate 41 is spaced from the bottom 40 to provide a sidewise extending slot 42. The bottom plate 41 is provided with an angular flange 43 extending over the outer face of the upper portion of the front 15, and this flange 13 is fastened in place with the upper row of bolts 27 used for fastening the front slab 25 to the front 15. v
The lower compartment 11 is open at the front and is formed of the sides 50 and the back 51 of sheet metal and having inturned flanges 52 and 53 (see Figs. 3 and 8 of which the flanges 52 rest on the flanges 32' while the flanges 53 rest on the bottom 40. The backs 16 and 51 and their flanges 31 and 53 are reinforced by angle irons 54, 55 fastened to the back 16 by bolts 56, 57 or similar fastening means, and bolts 58 connect the angle .irons 54:, 55 with each other andpass through the flanges 31and 53 and the bottom 10. to firmly secure thelower compartment 11 to the base 10K The upper end of each side 50 is provided with an inwardlyturned flange 60 terminating in a downwardly extending flange 61 from which. extends outwardly a flange 62, as plainly indicated in Fig. 8. Betweenthe inner flanges 61 of the two sides 50 extends a top 65, preferably in the form of a "glass" plate, to close the top of the lower comtwo sliding doors 70 and 71 each preferably made of a single sheet of glass of suiflcient thickness to dispense with frames for the same.
The doors '70 and 71 vided. on the face nea 1r outer edges with recesses 72, 73 forming finger holds for conveniently sliding the doors into open or closed position. 1 The doors 70 and 71 are inclined upwardly and rearwardly and their lower ends extend through the slot 12 and rest on a track formed of two sets of rollers 74, 75 mounted to turn on rivets or bolts 76 attached to angle irons 77 and 78, of which the "angle iron 77 is secured by bolts 79 to the under side of the top flange 30 and the plate 41, as plainly shown in Fig. The angle iron 78 is fastened to the front margin of the bottom 10 by bolts 80. The setsof rollers 74, 75 are spaced apart by division plates 81 held on the rivets 76. When the doors 7 0 and 71 are in closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, then their adjacent inner sides slightly overlap to completely close the frontopen end of the lower compartment 11. In order to open the door 70 the latter is moved to the right and in are proorder to open the door 71 the. latter is moved to the left. The upper ends of the doors 7 0 and 71 engage a guideway'forrned by two angle irons .90'and 91 having end flanges 92 and 93 fastened by bolts 94:, 95 to the inner flanges 61 of the sides 50. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be noticed that the upper ends of the doors and 71 are a' dis tance below the top of the guideway to allow of conveniently inserting the doors or removing the same whenever'it is desired to do so. In order ,to hold the upper ends of the doors 70 and 71 spaced apart use is made of a partition100 formed of a piece of doubled-up sheet metal 101 extending around the angle iron and secured thereto by screws 102 or other suitable fastening devices; A similar piece of metal 105 covers the front portion of the angle iron 91 and extends over the top thereof *to abut with. its inner edge against the partition 100. This piece or'metal 105 is fastened in place onthe angle iron 91 by. screws 106 or similar fastening devices. It will be noticedthat by the arrangement described the doors 70 and 71 can be easily moved into open or closed position without danger of binding and the doors are held properly spaced apart by the division. plates 81 and at the track and guideways respectively. A piece 107 of felt or other'suitable material is preferably interpo'sedbetween .the top 65 and the metal pieces 101, to provide a cushioning seat for the glass top 65. Bumpers 108 are secured to the sides 50 at the ends of the glass doors 70 and 71 to cushion the latter when in closed position.
The upper end of the back 51 is provided with an inwardly extending flange 110-rein- V forced by an angle iron 111 fastened in place by bolts 112 and 113, of which the bolts 113 also engage an angle iron 114 at-' tachedto the back 115 of the upper compartment 12 to fasten the latter in position on top of the lower compartment 11. Bolts 116 serve to fasten the angle iron 11 1 to the back 115.. @n the back 51 is arranged a mirror 120 engaged at the front and back by cushioning strips 121 and 122, of felt or other suitable material, and the said mirror 120 is held in place by a metal frame 125, the individual members of which are fastened by the bolts 57 and 112 to the angle irons 53 and 111. The top member of the frame 125 is provided with an extension 126 fastened by the bolt 113 to the angle iron 111, and this extension 126 supports'a felt strip 127 on which the rear end of the glass top 65 rests. The sides 50 of the lower compartment 11 are preferably provided with openings 130, each closed by a glass panel 131 mounted. in a suitable frame 132 fas tened to flanges 133 forming the wall of the corresponding opening (see. Fig. 7).
The upper compartment 12 is provided at each side with front and rear tubular legs 1 10 and 1&1 (see Figs. 3 and 6) resting on the top flanges 60 of the sides 50 of the lower compartment 11, and the said legs and 141 form integral parts of the two sides 1 12 of the upper compartment 12. The rear ends of the sides 1 12 are provided with flanges overlying the sides of the back 115 and fastened theretd by bolts 1 141 or other fastening devices. The upper compartment 12 is provided with a bottom fastened at its rear end by bolts 151 to an angle iron 152 secured by bolts 153 to. the back 115, andthe front of the bottom 150 is secured by bolts to an angle iron 156 having end flanges 157 fastened by bolts 158' to the sides 142 (see dotted lines in Fig. 5). The angle iron 156 forms with a. similar angle iron 160 a portion of a track having sets of rollers 161, 1.62 mounted to turn on r ets 163 connecting the angle irons with each other. The friction rollers 161, 162 are spaced apart by a division plate 16% held on.
Fig. It will be noticed that the bottom 150 forms with the top of the covering 165 a slot 168 through which extend the lower ends of the sliding doors 170 and 171 for opening and closing the front of the upper compartment 12. The doors 170 and 171 a that the guideways 172, 173 areof sufficient claim are each of a single piece of glass, similar back 115. The front of-the bottom 175 terminates in a downwardly extending cornice supporting platel80 andthe front end of the top 175 and the plate 180 are reinforced by an angle iron 181 fastened in place-aby bolts 182 and 183, also serve to fasten the cornice 184cm posi tion on the front plate 180. The cornice 184 fits between the upper portions of the sides 142. By reference to 3 it will be noticed height to permit of lifting the doors 170. and 171 to raise the lower ends thereof out'of the slot167 whenever it is desired to remove the doors 170 and 171 from the upper compartment 12 orto place thesaid doors in positiono'n the said compartment,
The upper compartment 12 is preferably provided with glass shelves 190 mounted on brackets 191 j fastened by bolts or other fastening devices 192 to the back 115, as 30 plainly shown in Fig. 4:. The back 115' of the upper compartment'l2 is provided intermediate the top 65 and the bottom 150 with a mirror 200 engaged along its margin by felt front and rear strips 201,202, and
