Description
H. s. BAKER.
SHIELD CARRYING SADDLE. APPLICATION IIL ED SBPT.16, 1909.
967,306. I Patented Aug. 16,1910.
awe mam HENRY S. BAKER, OF OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA.
SHIELD-CARRYING SADDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1910.
Application filed September 16, 1909. Serial No. 518,039.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shield-Carrying Saddles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in shield carrying saddles.
The object of the invention is to provide a saddle having in connection therewith a flexible shield which, when in use, is adapted to be placed around the body of the occupant of the saddle and when not in use, is adapted to be folded up and inserted in a suitable receptacle provided therefor in the body portion of the saddle.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of a man on horse back showing the application of my saddle with the shield in operative position around the rider. Fig. 2 is a side view of the saddle with the shield in place therein. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the saddle showing the shield in folded position therein. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the same on the line ll of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1, denotes the saddle which comprises a seat portion 2, a back engaging plate 3, having on its underside pads l, adapted to rest on the back of the horse in the usual manner. The back engaging plate 3, is provided with suitable girths or fastening bands 5, by means of which the saddle is securely fastened to the animal. On the seat portion 2, are arranged front and rear guards 6. Between the seat portion 2, and the back plate 3, of the saddle is provided a compartment 7 which is formed by spacing the seat portion 2, above the back plate 3. In forming this space, the opposite side edges of the seat portion 2, are preferably bent downwardly at an angle as shown at 8. Said downwardly bent edges when enga ed with the back plate support the seat portlon above said plate and thus form the space 7 The seat portion 2, is preferably secured to the back plate by angular fastening strips 9, which are bolted or otherwise secured to the opposite sides of the back plate and engage or fit over the downwardly bent edges of the seat portion as clearly shown in Fig. 4, of the drawings.
To the front edge of the back plate is hingedly connected a segmental cover plate 10, which is adapted to be swung upwardly thus closing the front end of the space between the back plate and seat portion of the saddle. On the upper edge of the closing plate 10, is formed a clip 11, which, when the plate is in closed position is adapted to be engaged with the upper edge of the front guard plate 6, of the saddle.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction ma be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A shield carrying saddle comprising a back engaging plate, a seat plate havln downwardly projecting side edges adapte to engage and rest on said back plate, where by said seat plate is spaced a suitable dis tance from said back plate to form a shield receiving compartment, angular fastening strips secured to said back plate and engaged with said downwardly projecting edges of the seat plate, whereby the latter is held in engagement with the back plate, guard plates formed on the opposite ends of said seat plate, a cover plate hingedly connected to the back plate, and a clip on the cover plate adapted to engage the front guard plate of the saddle and to close the front end of the space between said seat and back plates.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY S. BAKER. l/Vitnesses:
J. W. CUMMINs, L. G. Mnrnns.
