My invention relates to rubber boots-and shoes wherein the. :tootportion, which isf' formed of rubber, is connected with atop of leather, rubber duck, or other suitable material, and has Jfor its object to provide certain improvements in the manner of con'- neet-ing the rubber shoe portion with the top,

as will be hereinafter more definitely described and claimed,refe` rence being had to the ,accompanying drawing, in which: i

In the said drawing, referring more par- Figs. 1 and .2, the reference numeral 1 denotes the usual shoe or foot:-portion proper, formed of rubber or other suitable material, and 2 the top, which maybe formed of leather, rubber duck or other similar material,- and may be otA the Blucher form shown or of. any lother shape, as may be desired. It has been the practice. heretofore to unite this top with the rubber shoe by overlapping and sewing the two together, the lower edge of the top being placed outside the upper edge of the shoe. In my improved construction the i lower edge of the top is placed inside the upper edge of the rubber shoe and the two firmly united by lines of stitching 3, as shown. In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown a construction, wherein a covering strip 4 is" applied before the lines of stitching dare inserted, the latter being sewed through said strip 4 yas well, and said strip being formed with a series ot grooves 5 to receive said lines ot' stitching 3 and 'iii which said lines of stitching will lie so as to etfectually protect them `from, wear. In Figs. 5 and 6 have shown still an other modification, wherein the upper edge 'of the rubber shoe 1 itself is grooved at 5a to receive and protect the lines of stitch* ing 3.l

In all of these constructions it will be observed that the lower edge of the top is inserted within the upper edge vof the rubber shoe 1, a feature which I have found to be preferable `to having the edge of the top lie outside the rubber shoe, as the lines of stitching can be better protected in this way. It will yalso be understood that I conteml plate using my improved constructions not only with Blucher, tops, but also with tops'of any other configuration or pattern.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Let ters Patent is:

5. A boot or shoe, embodying a foot portion of rubber, and a top, the lower edge of said top lying within the upper edge of said foot portion and united thereto by threads, the upper edge of said rubber having horizontal grooves running around the top, so that the threads may lie therein and be protected, and a strip covering said seam and extended to `overlie the line of juncture and cemented to said boot and upper.
