WATERPROOF SHOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
Application filed February 8, 1915. Serial 30. 7,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. LENKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shamokin, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainvnew anduseful Improvements in \Vatcrproof Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figuresof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shoes and especially in the provision of means for making the joints intermediate the sole and the.upper waterproof.
The invention consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature, comprising various details of construction and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in theappended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in wlnch- Figure 1 is WPGISPGOUVG view of a shoe .made in accordance with my invention. Fig.
2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom plan view, parts being broken away to illustrate differ -v ent parts of the shoe.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the upper of a shoe to the inner face of which a sheet of water proof material B is pasted or otherwise attached, and C designatesa canvas lining inelosing the rubber sheet. The insole is designated by letter E and is fastened to the welting' D through the medium of the stitches F. Between the insole E and the outer sole H is a sheet of rubber or other water-proof material, designated by letter N, which is seated in a recess formed in the bottom of the insole and extends to the'edge of the insole and overlaps the joint intermediate the welt and inturned edge of the upper, A second sheet of water-proof material, designated by letter O,-is placed in a recess formed in the upper surface of'the outer sole H and is held flat against the adacent face of the sheet N and-extends outward over the concaved or cut away portion of the outsole to which the welt is fastened by the stitching R.
When the water-proof material is adjusted and secured in the manner shown, it will be noted that not only will the lining be protected by the sheet of water-proof material intermediate the same and the upper but the joints which are intermediate the upper and the sole and have double surfaces of Water; proof material will prevent moisture coming through the joints intermediate the upw, I
per and sole.
\Vhat I claim to be new is A water-proof'shoe comprising an upper and an insole having a recess in the under marginal surface thereof, a sheet of waterproof material in said recess and projecting over the inturned edge of the upper, a welt stitched to. said water-proof material, upper and insole, an' out sole having a recess in its upper marginal surface, and a sheet of water-proof material in said recess andin contact with the water-proof material in the under surface of the insole and extending underneath the welt.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
