CHARLES K. SHAROOD, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
SHOE-SOLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. l2, lOQ.
Application led August 31, 1908. Serial No. 450,979.
T o all whom t may concern:
Beit known that l, CHARLES K. SHAROOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Sole, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of the invention are, the provision in a merchantable form of a device of the class described, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture; the provision of a shoesole which shall give ample protection to the foot of the wearer; the provision in a novel form, of an upstanding peripheral rib Whereunto the inseam may be stitched; other objects and novel features of construction being disclosed as the description of the invention progresses.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, delineated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows the invention in vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 2 is a top plan; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line A-B, of Fig. 2 enlarged, that the construction may be more readily perceived.
In carrying out the invention, a thin lower layer of leather l is provided upon which is superposed a layer of heat-insulating material 2, preferably cork, the lower side of the layer 2 being covered with a layer of cloth 3, preferably cemented to the layer 2, the thin lower layer of leather l being stitched to the layers above it as shown at 10. Between the layers 1 and 3 is inter,- posed a heel-piece 4, preferably cemented in place, conforming to the periphery of the sole and terminating at the rear of the instep in a thinned edge 5 disposed transversely to the longer axis of the sole as shown by the dotted line 1l in Fig. 2.
Superposed upon the layer of heatinsulat ing material 2 and preferably stitched at 7 to the layers 2 and 3, is the up er layer of leather 6. rlhe stitching 7 W ereby the layer 6 is attached to those beneath it, follows the periphery of the layer 6 at a slight distance therefrom, as shown in Fig. 3. The outer edge of the upper layer of leather 6 thus left free, is flexed to form the upstandino rib 9, lying within the periphery of the `ljayer of heat-insulating material 2. A layer of textile material 8 covers the layer 6, and the edges of the layer S are stitched through the layer of heatdnsulating material 2 and the layer 3, between the upstanding rib 9 and the periphery of the layer 2, such stitching being indicated by the numeral 12.
ln forming the upstanding rib 9, to which the inseam is commonly sewed, the usual practice has been to employ a piece of soleleather to form the layer 6 slit the layer peripherally near its edge at an acute angle to the plane of the layer 6, raise the edge of the slit and sew the inseam thereto. This process results in weakening the layer 6, and the rib thus formed gives but an insecure place of attachment, difficulties which are obviated in the sole of my invention.
The use of the heel iece 4 furnishes a firm foundation for the hee into which attaching nails may be clenched, and the general construction of the sole, comprising a layer of heat-insulating material interposed between layers of leather results in a light and ilexible sole, capable of resisting dampness and cold.
l-laving thus described the invention what is claimed as new is.
1. In a device of the class described, a layer of relatively still material; snperposed thereon, a layer of relatively flexible material having its edges upstanding within the periphery of the layer eneath it; a second layer of relatively flexible material superosed upon the first and having its edges stitched to the layer of stiff material, between the upstanding edges of the iirst layer of flexible material and the periphery of the layer of still material.
2. A shoe sole comprising a lower layer of leather, a layer of heatinsulating material superposed upon the lower layer of leather; interposed between the lower layer of leather and the layer of heat-insulating material, a heel-piece conforming to the periphery of the sole and terminating at the rear ofthe instep in a thinned edge; superposed upon the layer of heat-insulating material another layer of leather having its edges upstanding within the peri hery of the layer of heat-insulating materia a layer of textile material covering the upper laye-r` of leather; and` edges stitched to thelayers benethvit; bei..
tween the u standing edges of the upper layer of leat er and the periphery of the layer of heat-insulating material.
3. A shoe sole comprising a lower layer of; leather; a layer of cork superposed upon the lower layer of leather; interposed between the lower layer of leather and the layer' of cork, a heelieee conforming to the periphery ofthe so e and terminating at the rear of the instep in a thinned edge; superposed upon the layer of cork an inner layer of leather .having its edges upstanding within the periphery of the layer of cork; a layer of ytextile material covering the upper layer of leather, and having its edges stitched to the layers beneath it, between the upstanding edges of the upper layer of leather and the periphery ofthe layer of cork.
4. A shoe-sole comprising a lower layerof leather; a layer of heat-insulating material superposed upon the lower layer of leather; superposed upon the layer of heat-insulating material an inner layer of leather having its --thenlayer heat -insulating material; a
layer of leather, and having its edges stitched tothe layers beneath it, between the upstanding edges of the upper layer of leather and the periphery of the layer of heat-insulating materia 5. A sho'eesolecomprising a lower layer of leather; a layer of cork superposed upon the lower layer of leather; superposed upon the layer of tcork, an up er layer of leather having its edges upst ancling within theperiphery of the layer of cork; a layer of textile material covering the upper layer of leather, and having its edges stitched to the layers beneath 1t, between the upstanding edges of of the layer of' cork.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 'my own,- l have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
