SOLE FOR SLIPPERS OR SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,280, dated October 9, 1894.

` To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J noon K. GRIFFITH, of Latrobe, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Soles for Slippers or Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of one form of my Improved sole. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line II-II of Figi. Figs. 3 and 4 are like vlews of modifications; and Fig. 5 is a side elevaltion of a shoe provided with my improved so e.

Like symbols of reference indicate like parts in each of theviews.

The objectof my invention is to provide a sole which can be used for making bed-room or house slippers, or shoes of crocheted or other fabric. Heretofore the uppers of such slIppers or shoes made of worsted have been sewed to the margin of soles especially prepared for that purpose,but when put into use the uppers soon spread beyond the soles and by coming into contact with the floor rapidly wear out. It is my object to obviate this difiiculty, and to render the slipper more durable than has been possible hitherto. I accomplish this result by making a sole in which the sewing-strip is not directly at the edge but is separated therefrom by a considerable margin. These soles are made and sold as individual articles of commerce, and when the upper is sewed thereto, and it spreads in wear, the projecting margin of the sole will protect it from injury. I also prefer to provide the sole with a laterally extending iiexible protecting strip of leather or other suitable material, such `as silk or leather, which 1s sewed to the upper and serves to protect it.

My invention consists in a sole having these features of construction whether the same be used separately or combined.

The iigures of the drawings show several forms of my improvement.

In the drawings, 2 represents the leather or under portion of the sole; 3, a facing on the upper side thereof, which may be made of cloth, felt or wool, and 4 is the sewing-strip, which is not at the edge of the sole but is separated therefrom by a margin 5. When the upper of the slipper or shoe is sewed to this sewing-strip, the margin 5 projects laterally beyond the same. In Fig. 3 I show a sole similarly constructed, except that under the facing 3 I apply a sheet 6 of leather, silk or other suitable flexible material, which projects laterally beyond the sole. When the upper is sewed to the sewing-strip, the projecfing margin of the strip 6 is also sewed to the sides of the upper and serves to protect the same.

In Fig. 4 the construction is in a manner similar to that of Fig. 3, except that the projecting sheet 6 in this case forms the bottom of the sole, and there is an intervening piece of card-board or other material 7, which is turned up with the sheet 6 to act as a stiftener thereto.

Various other modifications of my improvement such as will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art may be made without departure from the invention as defined in the claims, since What I claim is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, an outer sole for shoes and slippers, having a sewing strip secured thereto along a line separated from its edge, said sewing strip completely inclosing the space covered by the upper; substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, an outer sole for shoes and slippers, having a sewing strip secured thereto along a line separated from its edge, said sewing strip completely inclosing the space covered by the upper, and a laterally projecting flexible protecting strip arranged to be secured to the upper; substantially as described.

3. As anew article of manufacture, an outer sole for shoes and slippers, having a laterally projecting flexible protecting strip extending completely around the same and arranged to be secured to the upper; substantially as described.
