To all whom z'tmay concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. \VALLAGE, citizen of the United States, residing at Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slipper- Soles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention consists in the novel featnreshereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which I have shown one embodiment of my invention selected by me for the purposes of illustration and the said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims. I

Referring to the drawings,

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved padded sole and heel adapted to be used in making boudoir or toilet slippers.

Fig. 2 is a similar view partly in section.

Fig. 3 is a side view of the heel portion of the article showing the manner of attaching the inclosing cover to the rear end of the sole.

Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 4.1 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.

The primary object of my invention is to provide improvements in boudoir or toilet slipper soles, which are made up and sold to the trade as an article of manufacture, the purchaser then applying to the sole, any kind of upper he desires.

Another object of my invention is to so construct my improved sole, that only av slight thickness of leather is visible beneath the sole proper, and heel.

A still further object is to provide a slipper sole of this character, with a comparatively thick padded top, entirely inclosed in a casing of the same material and color as the heel covering, so that the article will present an attractive appearance to the purchasing public and when worn will be soft and comfortable.

A final object is to provide a slipper sole of this type, with a plurality of thicknesses of material through which the threads may pass in sewing an upper to the sole.

Y In the drawings, 1 designates my improved sole, which may be made of any suitable material, but preferably consists of an upper layer 2 of leather board having an edge-binding 3, and a bottom layer '1 of leather. Secured to the rear portionof the upper surface of the leather board 21133 a casing 8 of silk or satin, is placed over the layers of padding (3 and 7, and its edges are folded over the edges of the padding layers and bound edge of the leather board 2, and secured to the underside of the leather board by pasting, as'shown at 9. ,After this has 5 been done, the bottom leatherlayer 4:" is pasted to the under surface of the layer 2, and conceals the extreme edges of the cover 8.

In manufacturing the article the rear or heel end of the padding isleft unsecured to the upper surface of the shank stiffener in order to form a flap 10, and the cover 8 is also left unsecured at the heeltemporarily, in order to permit nails 11 to be driven through the layers 2 and 1 and into a heel 12, which has a cover 13, preferably of the same material as the sole cover 8.

After the heel has been attached, a pro tecting piece 14 of leather board is pasted e to the upper surface of the shank stiffener to conceal and shield the heads of the nails 11, and the padding layer 6 is then pasted to the piece ll. Finally the rear portion of' the cover 8 having the adhesive 15, is forced between the under surface of the heel portion of the leather board 2 and the upper surface of the heel, as shown at 16 in Fig. ljwhere said cover is retained by the adhesive 15.

After purchasing a pair of the soles and heels constructed as above set forth, suitable uppers, preferably the same in color as the

8 and 13, may be provided and stitched to the binding strip 3, and cover 8, so that when said uppers are thus secured their points of attachment will have double strength, by being sewed both to the cover 8 and to the binding 3.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have devised an improved form of boudoir slipper sole and one which when worn will be comfortable and easy on the foot of the wearer and at the same time present a neat and attractive appearance.

WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- 1. An article of manufacture comprising a sole consisting of superposed layers, the upper layer having a bound edge, padding provided upon the upper surface of the 11 per layer, and a cover inclosing said pail ding and the bound edge of the upper layer, and having its edges secured between the layers.

2. An article of manufacture comprising a sole consisting of two superposed layers, padding provided upon the upper surface of the upper layer, and a cover inclosing said padding and the edge of the upper layer, and having its edges secured between the layers.

3. An article of manufacture comprising a sole consisting of superposed layers, the upper layer having a bound edge, padding provided upon the upper surface ofthe upper layer, and .a cover inclosing said padding and the bound edge of the upper layer and having its edges secured between the layers by an adhesive substance.

4. An article of manufacture comprising a sole consisting of superposed layers, padding provided upon theupper surface of the upper layer, a cover inclosing said padding and the edge of the upper. layer and having its edges secured between the layers, and a heel secured to the sole beneath the rear portion of the same.

5. An article of manufacture comprising a sole consisting of a plurality of superposed layers, a shank stiffener secured to the rear portion of the upper surface of the upper layer of the sole,'padding provided upon the upper surfaces of the upper layer, and shank stiffener, a cover inelosing said padding and the edge of the upper layer and having its edges secured between the layers, and a heelseeured to the rear portion of said sole by nails which pass through said stiffener and sole.

An article of manufacture comprising a sole consisting of a plurality of superposed layers, a shank stiffener secured to the rear portion of the upper surface of the upper layer of the sole, padding provided upon the upper surfaces of the upper layer and shank stiffener, a cover inclosing said padding and the edge of the upper layer and having its edges secured between the layers, a heel secured to the rear portion of said sole by nails which pass through said stiffener and sole, and a protecting piece located between said stiffener andpadding for preventing the heads of the nails from working upwardly.

7. An article of manufacture comprising a sole consisting of a plurality of super posed layers, padding provided upon the upper surface of the upper layer of the sole,

a heel secured to the rear end of said sole, and a cover inclosing said padding and the edge of the upper layer, the edge of the heel portion of the cover being secured between the upper layer and heel, and the edge of the remainingportion of the vcover being secured between the layers of thesole. V

8. An article of manufacture comprising a sole consisting of a plurality of superposed layers, the upper layer having a bound edge, a shank stiffener secured to the upper surface of the upper layer of thesole, padding provided upon the upper surfaces of the upper layer and shank stiffener, a

heel secured to the rear portion of said sole by nails which pass through saidstiifener and sole, and a cover inclosing the padding and bound edge ofthe upper layer, the edge of the heel portion of the cover being-securedbetween the upper layer and the heel and the edge of the remainingportion of the cover being secured between the layers of the sole.
