ATTACHMENT FOR SHOTGUNS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID E. DEVOL, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Bay, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Shotguns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for shot guns or similar fire arms, and has for an object to provide an attachment which may be conveniently engaged with the muz zle of the gun and which will be so constructed as to act as a spreader for the shot after they are finally discharged from the barrel.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicatesimilar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a barrel showing my improved shot spreader applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the spreader. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
\Vith reference to the drawing, it will be seen that my improved attachment consists preferably of a spring member 1 which is substantially of semi-cylindrical form in cross section to conform in configuration with the shape of the muzzle end of the barrel B shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. By constructing the member 1 of spring metal the side portions thereof will be more or less elastic and when the member is engaged with the barrel the said side portions will yieldingly grip corresponding surfaces of the barrel to hold the member thereon, as is obvious.
The forward extremity of the member 1 is formed to provide forwardly extending arms 2 which extend beyond the muzzle of the barrel, as shown. These arms are bent or formed otherwise in an obvious or like man ner to provide inwardly directed vanes 3. These vanes are formed to provide rela tively sharp edges 4:, as shown. The vanes 3 are each bent preferably on a diagonal line from the main body portion of its arm so that the distance between the vanes at the rear ends of the arms will be greater than the distance between the vanes at the forward extremities of the arms.
The construction of the attachment herein set forth and described is such that it can be quickly and conveniently applied to any gun barrel or the like and, incident to the provision of the vanes 3 which extend immediately in line with the bore of the barrel, the shot will be spread after their final discharge in a very effective manner.
I claim 1. A shot spreader for guns comprising a split member gripping the muzzle end of the barrel and formed to provide forwardly extending shot-spreading vanes whose inner edges are flared downwardly toward the muzzle end of the gun and sharpened throughout.
2. A shot spreader for fire arm barrels comprising a member removably fitting the outer end of the barrel and formed beyond the end of the barrel to provide vanes which are arranged in intersecting planes, the said vanes having their outer edge portions eX- tending directly into the main body portion of the said member to present angularly extending surfaces.
3. A shot-spreading attachment for fire arm barrels comprising a member removably fitted to the outer end of the barrel and formed with integral vanes which are arranged in intersecting planes and which are positioned immediately in front of the bore of the barrel, each vane having its inner edge flared outwardly and rearwardly toward the outer end of the barrel and sharpened throughout.
