SPRAYING ATTACHMENT FOR NOZZLES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Josnri-I B. GrAINES, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of ()hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprayin Attachments for Nozzles, ofwhich the following is a specification.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide an attachment which will be simple in construction and economical to manufacpermit the nozzle to be not only manipulated by the user but which will also form an eliicient support for the nozzle so that the same may be set upon the lawn or other surface to be sprayed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a nozzle and a portion of the hose, showing my improved spraying attachment applied thereto.

Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section on the line 6-?) of Fig. 2.
The attachment is preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal so as, to constitute a central channel-shaped portion 1, and opposite outwardly and downwardly extending side wings 2 and 3 which form the support for the nozzle 4. The forward portion of the nozzle is clamped between two spring arms 5 and 6, preferably formed from a single piece of spring wire bent at right angles to the central portion 7 the said central portion being slipped under a struck up portion 8 of the channel shaped portion 1, the bottom of the channel being formed with transverse slits 9 and 10 for this purpose. As shown in Fig. 6, both the channel portion 8 and the wire 7, after the parts are assembled, are further bent up as indicated at 11. so as to lock the parts together and prevent endwise movement, thus eliinihating the use of solder. Each of the spring arms 6 and 7 are bowed outwardly and thence inwardly indicated at 6 and 7 and then have their outer ends flared outwardly as indicated at 6 and 7 so that the nozzle may be readily inserted between the arms in the bowed out portion 50 that the arms will surround the nozzle and effectively hold it in position.
Projecting forwardly and upwardly from the forward end of the channel shaped portion is the spraying member proper 12 having upwardly extending side flanges 18. This spraying member 12 and its side flanges diverge laterally outwardly from the channel; that is, the spraying member is of the same width as the channel where it joins the same and then flares not only upwardly and outwardly in a forward direction but also laterally so that its outer width will be considerably greater than the inner width thereof so as to give a spray of great range. In order to further assist in directing the spray laterally to the desired degree, I have provided the spraying member 12 with a centrally arranged upwardly extending rib 14 and have also bent the extreme outer edge thereof slightly upwardly to form a lip as indicated at 15, shown best in Fig. 6. This central rib 14, it has been found, divides the stream of water and causes it to be deflected against the flanges 14 while the upwardly bent portion or lip 15 cause-s the spray to be directed upwardly as it leaves the edge of the spraying member, thus causing it to be carried to a greater distance than otherwise not only forwardly but laterally.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. As an article of manufacture, in a spraying attachment for nozzles, a main body portion having a longitudinal centrally-arranged channel therein and integrally-formed downwardly-projecting angularly-arranged wings on the side edges thereof to form supports, spring arms arranged in said channel to receive the nozzle, and an integrally-formed forwardly and upwardly projecting portion on said main body portion, said upwardlyprojecting portion having side vWalls and 2t centrally-arranged rib and also htvingits' outer edge slightly upturned to form a lip.
