To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PnRcY G. MAYHEW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Fillers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in mattress fillers, and its object is to provide simplified and improved means whereby a suitable quantity of felt or other yieldable material is rigidly held in proper shape and inserted within the tick or case of a mattress, the device readily removed from between the tick and filling, and to provide the device with various new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims. My device consists solely of a series of rigid bars arranged parallel and spaced apart, and with opposing bars above and be low the material, said bars being provided with detachable fastenings connecting each separate pair of bars at each end, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.

1 represents the filling material, which may be of felt or any other suitable elastic material; 2 represents the tick or casing for the same, which latter when applied is preferably rolled back upon itself as illustrated at 3, and after the material is partially inserted therein, is unrolled to cover the same.

My device consists of any preferred number of rigid bars 1, preferably of hard wood and arranged in opposing pairs, above and below the material, which is clamped therebetween. These bars are spaced apart horizontally, and as many pairs of the same may be used, as is considered expedient, three being shown. At one end each bar is provided with an eye 5 and a chain 7 attached thereto and the other end is provided with a hook 6 to detachably engage the various links of the chain. Obviously other devices for connecting the bars may be substituted, but I prefer the construction shown.

hen arranged upon the material as shown in Fig. 1, the chains are engaged with the hook 6 to hold the bars with the material firmly clamped therebetween and with portions projecting between the bars at the respective sides. In this condition, the material 1 is held rigidly and fiat, and can be readily inserted within the tick or case 2. After being thus inserted, the filling between the bars will engage the tick or case and the latter held in place therein while removing the bars. The clamping bars are then easily removed by releasing the chains at the outer end of the bars, where the tick or casing is open, whereupon by reversing the position of each bar having the hook at the inner end, as in Fig. 3, the said hook will thus be released from the chain, whereupon the bars can all be withdrawn longitudinally from between the material and the tick without disturbing the position of the tick or the filling material. Should there be any difficulty in respect to the engagement of the hook 6 with the material 1 when withdrawing the bar, the same is readily avoided by partially or wholly returning the bar to its position shown in Fig. 2, before withdrawing the same.

\Vhat I claim is:

1. A mattress filler, consisting of two series of bars arranged in opposing pairs and spaced apart, and also extending longitudinally of the filling material and in contact therewith and detachable fastenings connecting each end of each separate pair of bars.

2. A mattress filler, consisting of a series of rigid bars adapted to engage the under side of filling material and spaced apart from each other, a corresponding series of rigid bars adapted to engage the upper side of said material and arranged opposite the first named bars, a chain attached to one end of each bar, and a hook on the other end of each bar opposite the chain on the opposite bar and adapted to detachably engage said chain by rotating the bar to reverse position.
