To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNST I-IUGENDUBEL, a citizen of the German Empireyresiding at Stuttgart, in the Kingdom of Wtirtemberg, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to improvements in the method of fastening on umbrella coverings in fact the improvements enable not only the covering to be removed from the so called ribs with much greater facility, but also from the umbrella stick itself.

So far as the new method of attachment to the ribs is concerned, the ends of the covering to be fastened are jammed into slotted clips, and these inserted through corresponding eyes or slots at the ends of the ribs, whereby they are automaticallyheld fast by the tension of the covering, or the same can be inserted in these slots at the ends of the ribs without the clips, and then secured there by means of a kind of rivet or the like. Such clips are themselves known, but hitherto they were of an extremely complicated form and further they were placed on the ribs, while according to the present invention they are inserted in them. Also the stitching of the covering for the purpose of fastening it to the ribs is generally known, but this method apart from the lar 'e amount of time it requires is not advisabl e.

The fastening of the umbrella covering to the stick was hitherto eifected by sewing it around after it was placed over the stick in order to prevent the material from ripping and slipping over the frame of the umbrella, or the umbrella covering was clipped be tween two cylindrical, clips. According to this invention the covering, with the part to be fastened to the ribs, is placed over a cap piece, for example of bell shape, and a ring slipped over this latter which presses the ends of the material into a channel of the cap piece which then at the top has its edge bent around, so that an accidental pulling out of the material and a loosening of the stitching is quite prevented. The new method can be carried out either by machinery or by hand. In any case the cover can be attached or taken off without any diificulty according to the present invention and such operation is considerably facilitated.

The object of the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, by way of example, in difierent forms of construction.

Figure 1 shows the covering fastened to an umbrella; Figs. 2-4: show in side view and front view the attachment of the covering to the ribs by one method; while Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are views of a second method; Figs. 810 show the fastening of the covering to the stick; Fig. 8 being an axial section through the cap of the stick; Fig. 9, the same after the covering is attached; while Fig. 10 shows the cap mounted on the stick.

In the form of construction shown in Figs. 2%, the end a of the covering to be secured is jammed in such a way into a longitudinally slotted clip 6 that this latter clips around the edges of the umbrella covering a. The clip 7) is now inserted through a slot d at the end of the ribs 0, the length of this slot being such that after the stretching of the covering a the clip Z2 automatically lies in front of the slot cl and engages over it so that it cannot come out accidentally (Fig. 3) and the covering is secured in an easily removable manner.

I11 the form of construction shown in Figs. 5-7, the end a of the covering a is inserted (for instance by means of a suitable hooked instrument in the slot (Z of the rib (Fig. 6) and subsequently secured by means of a staple f or the like, for which purpose the checks of the ribs 0 at the slots cl are provided with holes 6 (Figs. 5 and 6.) By the bending around or clenching of the ends f the fastening is made secure, but it can be quickly undone again.

In order to attach the cover a to the stick it, the cover with the sewn ends of the separate parts of the material are pushed over the cap piece 71, which has a channel a thereon in which the cover is laid, and a ring is is then placed on it which presses the ends of the material on to the cap piece 2'. The upper edge of the latter is next bent around (Fig.9) so that a pullin out of the covering a is impossible and the same is securely clipped on the cap piece by means of the edge 2'. The cap piece 2' is preferably shaped somewhat like a bell (Fig. 8) so that it can be easily passed on to the stick. They can also be made in one piece with the so called umbrella cap m I (Fig. 1), whereby the advantage of a further simplification is attained.
