TNI mmms PETERS co WASHINGTON, a c.
NATHAN SIMON, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
COLLAR-S'IIFFENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN SIMoN, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resldent of the city of Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Stiffeners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to braces or stiffeners for soft collars, waist belts, &-c., and 1s designed for convenient attachment to such collars and belts whereby the same may be prevented from wrinkling together.
The best form of apparatus embodylng my invention at present known to me, with one slight modification, is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of my 1mproved collar stiffener. Fig. 2 is a similar view of slightly modified construction, and Fig. 3 is a vertical central section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Throughout the drawings, like reference characters indicate like parts.
The body of my improved collar stiifener is composed of a strip or strips of elastic material, preferably metal, of a rectangular cross section the width being two or more times the thickness. These strips are preferably covered with an envelop of fibrous material which may be done by wrapping thread or weaving a cover over the strips while straight. They are then bent in the plane of their width, or greater cross sectional dimension, into approximately the form of a figure 8. Such strip is shown at a in Fig. 1, which is bent into two loops a and (4 the end being butted together at the middle of the figure 8 so formed. The fibrous covering is represented by 6. About the middle straight portion of the figure 8 so formed is an additional wrapping b of thread or other fibrous material, which holds the parts together, and within this wrapping there may be inserted stiffening plates 0 of any elastic material, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and shown in Fig. 8.
The construction shown in Fig. 2' and Fig. 3 is the same as that indicated in Fig. 1, except that the two strips d and d are used instead of one strip a. Each of these strips is bent into the form of a loop and the ends are caused to abut together within the additional wrapping or envelop b.
In using my invention, it is stitched or otherwise fastened to the collar or belt at varlous points and serves to hold the same Specification of Letters Patent.

in flat or expanded condition, while at the same time it is flexible and permits the collar or belt to bend outward with the move ments of the wearer.
The form of cross section of flexible strip a may of course be varied from the rectangular form shown in the drawings, though the particular form of cross section shown gives the greatest flexibility in the direction of bending when in use, and is the preferred form for this reason, when metal is the material used.
Having, therefore, described my invention, I claim:
1. A collar stiffener comprising in combination a flat elastic strip bent in the plane of its longer cross sectional dimension into a figure 8 form, an envelop of fibrous material extending the entire length of said strip and a reinforcing wrapping of fibrous material about the middle portions of'the figure 8.
2. A collar stiffener comprising in combination a flat elastic strip bent in the plane of its longer cross sectional dimension into a figure 8 form, an envelop of fibrous material extending the entire length of said strip and a reinforcing wrapping of fibrous material about the middle portion of the figure 8, together with a stiffening plate of elastic material within said reinforcing wrapping.
3. In a garment stiffener the combination with a loop of flexible material and a straight section composed of portions of the material forming the sides of the loop arranged side by side, of a stiffening sheath inclosing said straight portion, and a winding of thread covering said sheath.
4. In a garment stiffener the combination with a loop of flexible material and a straight section composed of portions of the material forming the sides of the loop arranged side by side, of a stiffening sheath inclosing said straight portion, and a winding of thread covering said sheath and the iLCljElCGIlt portions of material forming the 5. In a garment stiffener the combination with a strip of flexible material bent to form a figure presenting a loop at each end and a straight middle section composed of portions of the material forming the sides of the loops arranged side by side, of a stiffening sheath inclosing said straight section.
6. In a garment stiffener the combination with a strip of flexible material bent to form a figure presenting a loop at each end and a straight middle section composed of portions of the material forming the sides of the loops arranged side by side, of a stifiening sheath inclosing said straight section, and a Winding of thread covering said sheath.
7. In a garment stifl ener the combination with a strip of flexible material bent to form a figure presenting a loop at each end and a straight middle section composed of portions of the material forming the sides of the loops arranged side by side, of a stiffening sheath inclosing said straight sect-ion, and a Winding of thread covering said sheath and the adjacent portions of material forming the loop.
8. A collar supporter comprising a single continuous strip of laterally resilient but longitudinally incompressible material, said strip being bent to the outline of tWo oppositely disposed loops With an intermediate straight portion connecting said loops, the straight connecting portion comprising two strands or thicknesses of said continuous strip placed side by side, said straight portion being surrounded by additional stiffening means.
Signed at Berlin this 20 day of March, 1908'.
