Be it known that I, JOHN N. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Liberty, in the county of Liberty and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ejecting-Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pen holders, and more particularly to ejecting pen holders, and has for its object to provide such an article which will be positive in its action and of simple structure.

Another object is to provide such an article which will hold the pen securely in engagement until operated.

Another object is to provide such an article which will comprise but few parts and which may be easily manufactured at a low cost.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the pen holder having a pen engaged therein, in operative position, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank for the engaging member, and Fig. 3 is a detail of the operating pin.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a pen holder having a handle portion 10 on one end of which there is engaged a sleeve 11 provided with a longitudinally extending rectangular slot 12 near its outer end. An engaging member 13 is secured within the sleeve and comprises a strip of metal bent to form a resilient hook 1 1 at its outer end, the bill of the hook tending to close the slot 12 yieldably. The engaging member 13 includes a body portion 15 extend ing away from the hook 14 the opposite end portion 15 of which is turned laterally and then backward in spaced relation with the body portion and its extremity 16 turned inwardly to lie against the body portion 15, being secured thereto in a suitable manner, the base of the port-ion 16 being located adjacent to the inner end of the slot 12. An opening 17 is formed in the body portion 15 of the engaging member directly over the Specification of Letters Patent.

slot 12, and slits 18 communicating with the opening 17 are formed through the adjacent portion of the engaging member for a purpose to be presently indicated. The body portion 15 of the engaging member lies in spaced relation with the adjacent wall portion of the sleeve 11, to receive a pen in loosely sliding engagement therebetween. An operating pin 19 comprising a flat blank of wedge shape, having laterally extending fingers 20 at its smaller end and having a finger nail engaging portion 21 at its larger end is engaged slidably through the slot 12, and through the opening 17 therebeneath.

It will be seen that when the operating pin is engaged through the slot 12 it will force the bill 11 of the hook portion 1 1 outwardly and cause the bight A of the hook to impinge against the adjacent wall of the sleeve 11. WVhen a pen is engaged therebetween it will be held firmly for use, until released by outward movement of the operating pin.

I11 order to disengage a pen from the de vice, outward movement of the pin 19 will relieve the pressure of the member 15 against the pen, allowing its ready removal.

It will be understood from the foregoing that a pen holder is provided which is adapted to receive any of the usual types of pens, and which is arranged for rapid ejection thereof with great ease of manipulation.

In normal use, the pin 19 remains engaged in the opening 17 and the release of the pen is effected by outward movement of the pin under manipulation, the hook portion 14: being compressed and the pen being released from pressure between the sleeve 11 and the portion 15 of the engaging member 13. The wedge shape of the pin allows the bill portion of the hook to slide inwardly, thus facilitating the release of the pen, and when the pin is forced inwardly, the bill portion is forced outwardly, serving to make the compression of the pen by the bight portion of the hook more effective.

What is claimed is:

1. An ejecting penholder comprising a handle portion, a sleeve engaged thereon, said sleeve having a longitudinally extending rectangular slot adjacent to its outer end, a pen-engaging portion secured within the sleeve, to form a pen-receiving space at one side of the sleeve, said pen-engaging portion comprising a resilient metal blank bent to form a hook, said hook having its bill presented in yielding engagement against the sleeve and tending to move over the slot, said hook having its bight disposed in spaced relation to the adjacent Wall portion of the sleeve, for the reception of a pen therebetween, and a wedge-shaped pin slidably engaged in the slot to force the bill of the hook outwardly and cause the bight of the hook to impinge against the pen when engaged between the bight and the wall of the sleeve.

2. An article of the class described comprising a handle portion having a metal sleeve engaged thereon, said sleeve having a longitudinally extending rectangular slot adjacent to its outer end, a pen-engaging member secured within the sleeve comprising a resilient hook having its bill engaged against the inner face of the sleeve and tending to close the slot, said hook having its bight disposed in spaced relation with the adjacent wall portion of the sleeve to receive a pen therebetween, said pen-engaging member having a registering opening formed therein, oppositely of the slot, said wardly and cause the bight to impinge against a pen when engaged between the bight and the sleeve.
