WHEELING-IBED.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD J. LEARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVheeling-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wheeling beds, bassinets or the like and has for an object to provide a bed of this character which will possess such hygienic qualities as will pre sent an extremely soothing influence upon the child, obviating jolting or the like and furnishing a gentle, even and elastic motion when the bed is being used.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better disclosed and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claims can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bed. Fig. 2 is an end view of the bed. Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view of a portion of the bed. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the cushioning means for the sliding sides of the bed. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional perspective view of the cushioning means. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the side supporting hooks. Fig. 7 is a sectional perspective of one of the corner posts showing the manner of clamping the spring frame thereto.

My improved wheeling bed embodies supporting wheels 1 which are provided with cushioned peripheral surfaces 2, the usual well known rubber tires being embodied in this instance. These wheels are mounted upon axles 3 from which arise springs 4 for supporting the truss members 5 of a spring carrying frame 6. The spring carrying frame is of rectangular form as herein shown and it may be provided with any woven wire fabric spring bot-tom 7. The axles 3 are connected to each other by members 8 upon which are slidably mounted brake shoes 9. These shoes are of usual construction and are adapted to be thrown into or out of operation by means of foot levers 10.

The frame 6 is provided at its corners with depending spherical heads 11 which are set in the sockets 12 of members 13. These Specification of Letters Patent.

The members 13 are each provided with a depending screw 21 with which is engaged the winged adjusting nut 22. .By thus connecting the frame 6 with the corner posts of my improved bed it will be appreciated that the bed can be conveniently knocked 1dpwn or set up for storage purposes or the The corner posts 20 are provided with horizontally extending brackets 22 in which are formed eyes 23 for the reception of auxiliary posts 24L. These posts are located adjacent to the corner posts 20 and as shown these posts are hollow throughout their entire length for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described. The bed is provided with sides 25 which are each provided with a horizontally extending longitudinal rail 26 which is adapted to be engaged with supporting hooks 27 upon the brackets 22 to support the sides normally as is obvious. The corner posts 20 are provided with piston heads 27 whose rods 28 extend downwardly and whose lower extremities are provided with horizontal elements 29. These elements support piston rods 30 whose heads 31 operate in the posts 2 1. The elements 29 are connected by means of brackets 32 with the sides 25 of the bed so that the downward movement of the said sides will be retarded and slightly arrested by the said piston 27 and 31 respectively. The bed is provided with the usual ends 33 or head or foot pieces, and as shown these ends are formed of suitably connected spaced rails 3a which are similar in construction. with the construction of the sides 25. The posts 24 are formed with stop shoulders 35 and the posts 20 are formed with stop shoulders 36, the provision of the said shoulders being for the purpose of limiting the downward sliding movement of either of the sides 25. The rails 26 are provided adjacent to their ends with eyes 37 which are engaged with the posts 24L, this arrangement being provided for the purpose of efiectively guiding the sides in their movements.

A bed as constructed on the lines as herein shown and described will be found most sanitary, useful and serviceable and will contain all of the hygienic properties of a crib, cradle or the like and will obviate any harmful jolting from side to side of the child which will present an extremely soothing influence to a restless child and will induce a tired or fretful child to sleep.

Having thus described the invention what is'claimed as new is:

1. A bed comprising a portable frame, end members carried by the frame, slidable side members carried by the frame, each being formed from an openwork structure, means adapted to hold the said sides normally against sliding movement, and cushioning means for retarding the movement of said sides.

2. A bed comprising a wheeled frame, a frame yieldingly supported upon the said wheeled frame, a plurality of pairs of posts 7 at the corners of the said second-named named frame, pistons operating in the said posts, slidable sides upon the second-named frame, means connecting, the said pistons with the said slidable sides, and means upon the posts adapted to be engaged with the said slidable sides to hold them against slid- 1 ing movement.

4-. A bed comprising a wheeled frame, a series of posts upon the frame, pistons operating in the said posts, slidable sides upon the frame, connections between the said pistons and the said sides, and means for supporting the sides normally and for holding them against sliding movement.

5. A bed comprising a wheeled frame, a plurality of pairs of posts upon the frame, pistons operating in the posts of each pair, slidable sides operatively connected with the pairs of pistons, said sides being slidably engaged with one post of each pair at one side of the said frame, and means adapted to be engaged with the slidable sides to hold them against sliding movement.
