JOHN E. CONLEY, '01 MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
SWITCH-BAR-ADJUSTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 1, 1909. Serial'No. 505,306.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. CONLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Switch-Bar-Adjusting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to switch bar adjusting devices, and has for its object to provide a new and improved device of this description.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a view of the adjustable piece by which the adjustment is made.
It is desirable in the use of railway switches to adjust the switch point with its associated rail.
One of the objects of the present device is to provide a simple, cheap and eflicient means for securing this result.
Referring now to the drawings, I have shown the switch point 1 and the rail 2 with which it is associated. The switch point is connected to the adjustable support 3 in any desired manner as by means of the bolts 4.. The adjustable support 3 is adjustably connected with the controlling part 5 so that it may be adjusted with relation thereto, to vary the position of the switch :point 1. As herein shown, the adjustable Support and controlling part 5 are connected together by an adjustable piece 6. The adjustable piece 6 fits into an opening in the controlling part 5, and has a supporting part 7 which rests upon the controlling part 5. This supporting part is preferably provided with one or more projections 8 which fit into openings in the controlling part 5. Said adjustable piece is provided with a hole 9 eccentrically located. The adjustable support 3 is preferably provided with two separated portions 10 between which the controlling part is received. These separated portions are provided with holes 11 adapted to register with the eccentric hole 9. The parts are firmly connected together by means of a bolt 12, which passes through the holes 11 and 9. WVhen the parts are thus fastened together, there is a rigid connection between them, and no danger of any relative movement. The adjustable support as shown in the drawing has a portion formed into a loop, into which is received the controlling part and the adjustable piece.
When it is desired to adjust the switch point, the bolt l2-is removed, and the separated portions 10 (see Fig. 3) moved to one side so as to free the adjustable piece 6. This adjustable piece is then lifted so as to disengage the projections 8, and is then turned to get the desired adjustment. The turning of this adjustable piece varies the position of the eccentric hole 9, moving it forward or backward with relation to the controlling piece 5. Then the desired amount of adjustment is secured, the projections 8 are inserted in the holes in the controlling part, and the separated portions 10 moved back into posit-ion, and then moved until the holes 11 register with the hole 9. The bolt 12 is then placed in position, the nut tightened, thus locking the parts in this adjusted position. It will thus be seen that any desired amount of adjustment may be secured, that this adjustment may be easily and quickly made, and that after the parts are in position, there is no chance of any relative movement thereof. It will further be seen that this arrangement forms a simple construction which cannot get out of order or become deranged. In practice there are two switch points, one at each side, each having an adjusting device associated with it.
I claim:
1. The combination with a switch point of an adjustable support connected therewith, a controlling part, an adjustable piece intermediate the adjustable support and the controlling device, and a fastening device which passes through all three parts to hold them in place, said adjustable piece having a concentric connection with the controlling part, and an eccentric connection with the fastening device.
2. The combination with a switch point of an adjustable support connected therewith, a controlling part, said adjustable support provided with two separated parts between which the controlling part is received, an adjustable piece also contained between said separated parts, means for preventing the rotation of said adjustable piece, and a fastening device passing through all the parts .and eccentrically connected with the adjustable piece.

3. The combination with aswitch point adjustable piece having a concentric conof an adjustable support connected therenection with the controlling part and an ec- 10 with a controlling part, the adjustaiolehsup centric connection with the fastening device. port havin a 100 ec ortion into w no the controlling part is r ceived, an adjustable JOHN OONLEY' piece contained within said looped portion, WVitnesses:
a fastening device which passes through all F YV. LANGE, of said parts to hold them in place, said F. O. TAYLOR.
