METALLIC TIE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI CRONIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norton, in the county of Quay and Territory of New Mexico, have invented a new and useful Metallic Tie; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to metallic ties and has for its object to provide a simple efiioient and durable device of this character adapted to be used on railroads.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a tie of this character having special means for securing the rail to said tie, and for holding said rail and tie in rigid engagement under all circumstances, whereby the accidental spreading of the rails will be prevented.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a metallic tie and fastenings constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through one of the inner aws. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken through one of the outer jaws. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the jaws shown in engagement with the rail.
Referring to the drawings 1 and 2 designate the upper and lower horizontal portions of my metallic tie connected together by a web 3. The upper or engaging portion 1 is provided with a rall-engagin plate 4: on which is mounted a transverse plate 5. Be low the portion 1 of the tie is a recess 6 in which is inserted a transverse member 7. On either side of the tie are provided a screw threaded bolt 8 and 9 which bolts pierce the transverse member 5, the rail-engaging plate 2, the upper portion 1 of the tie and the member 7 The nut 8 engages a recess 1-0. The nut 9 is held against rotation by an upturned portion 11 by the transverse member 5.

It will be seen that my invention is simple, inexpensive and durable and that when the tie and rail are connected by the fastenings above set forth a firm and unyielding seat of the rail is produced, and I desire it to be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from this invention, or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
WVhat I claim is 1. The combination of a metallic tie having upper and lower horizontal portions con nected together by a web portion, rail-engaging plates mounted upon said upper horizontal portion, transversely disposed plates below said upper horizontal portion penetrating said web, and means penetrating the upper horizontal portion the transversely disposed plates below said upper horizontal portion and the rail-engaging plates to hold the rail engaging plates in position.
2. The combination of a metallic tie having upper and lower horizontal portions connected together by a web portion, railengaging plates mounted upon the upper horizontal portion, a member 5 arranged upon each of the said rail-engaging plates and provided with an upturned portion, said web having a transverse opening below the upper horizontal portion, a plate disposed in said opening and below the upper horizontal portion, bolts penetrating the upper horizontal portion, the plate therebelow, a rail-engaging plate and the said member, and nuts threaded upon said bolts, one of which being engaged by the upturnedportion of said member to prevent displacement of it.
