Be it known that I, HENRY Das Rosrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Havre, in the county of Hill, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements' in Locks for Railway-Rails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in locks for railway rails. l
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this character by means of which a rail may be elfectively secured to a tie in such manner that it will beprevented from accidental displacement or creeping.
With this and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views:
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, I have provided a base plate l which is adapted to extend beneath a rail, indicated in the drawing by the reference character 2. This base plate is provided with a plurality of notches 3 therein for the reception of spikes by means of which the base may be secured to the tie. Formed integrally with this base and extending upwardly therefrom is a shoulder 4, the inner face of which is inclined both vertically and horizontally.
In order that the rail may be clamped to this shoulder and prevented from creeping, I have provided a locking member which consists of a body portion 5 having an inclined face adapted to contact with the incli-ned face of the shoulder 4 and a pair of plates '6 which extend outwardly from the body portion 5 in opposite directions and are provided with apertures 7 therein. These plates 6 are adapted to contact with the adjacent face of the web of the rail to be secured thereto by bolts.
In order that the locking member may be secured to the shoulder 4, I have provided the said locking member and shoulder with a hole extending therethrough. This hole extends partly through the body portion of the locking member and passes through the inclin-ed face of the said body portion. At one side of the locking member a shoulder or hole is located entirely in the locking member, while at the other side it is so arranged that it is partly locatel in the body portion 5 of the locking member and partly in the shoulder 4. At this point the joint between the locking member and the shoulder passes through the center of the said hole. A bolt 8 having an integral head on one end thereof is passed through the said hole and secured therein by a nut which is in threaded engagement with the other end thereof. This arrangementof the bolt within 'the shoulder and the locking member will prevent their relative movement and the inclined faces of the locking member and shoulder will cause the plates 6 to bind firmly against the web of the rail when the nut on the end of the bolt 8 is drawn tight.
The body portion 5 of the locking member is cut-out, at 9 for the reception of the adjacent side of the base of the rail.
Vhile I have described the construction of my device at only one side of the rail it is tobe understood that the elements are duplicated on the other sid-e thereof.
It is of course to be understood that the device may be used as a rail joint` where two abutting rails are in contact.
IVhile I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it has merely been forthe sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A rail joint locking device comprising a base member, upwardly extending spaced shoulders carried by thebase member and having convergent inner faces, said faces of the shoulders being also inclined downwardly and outwardly, a pair of locking `members disposed between the shoulders, said locking members having outer faces formed to fit against the inner faces of the shoulders and disposed thereagainst, said shouldersand locking members having alin- 10 ing openings formed therethrough opening through .their side faces and fastener` devices engaged through the openings, said locking members being arranged for engagement of their inner faces against a rail web and having lateral plates the inner faces of which are flush with the inner faces of the locking members. p'
