Description
A datiert gister @sind dtiilm.
Letters Patent No. 96,233, dated October- 26, 1869.
IMPROVED GUTTER FOR. DOOR-SIJLS.
' L The Schedule referred to in these Lett ers Patent and making part of the same.
videdl in the sills of outside doors, for catching and conducting off whatever rain may beat or be drifted in from the outside.
The first part of my invention relates to a flap, or cover, hinged to the inner margin of the guttelyand l to which the edge of the carpet may be fastened, which ap being slightly elevated, conducts all the rain into the gutter.
'Ine second part of my invention relates to a provision for automatically lifting the Hap, in and by the act of closing the door.
The third part of my invention relates to a means of suspending the action of the lifting-device.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a double door, provided with my improvement, and with one of the flaps thrown wide open, so as to expose the gutter.
Figure 2 is a veitic lsection through the lower portion of the door, the iap being shown in its elevated or effective position.
A and B represent the two members of a double` door, of which each member has in its sill a gutter, C, whose bottom declines toward the door-jarnb, and discharges by suitable spout, D, which passes to the outside ofthe building.
In order to hide 4the gutter C from view, and that it may offer no obstruction to the passage, and also to prevent the rain beating into the room, I provide .a flap or deeotor, E, which is hinged to the inner edge of the gutter, or to the sill ou that side. This flap `being set open by a wedge or other device, when the door is shut, airests the rain as it enters the rooin beneath the door, and conducts it into the gutter O.
rlhe opening of the iiap by the act of closing the door may be rendered automatic by the following means:
One end of the sill is excavated to -receive a lever, F, whose outer portion j", when the door is open, is slightly elevated by the weight of the iiap upon its inner portion f, but oo closng the door is depressed by a projection from the door, so as to elevatethe edge ofthe Hap.
This projection may handle g occupies a slot, H, in the door, said slot having notches h h for retaining the bolt, either in its effective or non-eiective position. l
Slots or apertures e inthe iiap, near its ontei` edge, enable the attachment of a carpet or Vother door-covering.
My improvement is equally applicable to single or to double doors.
I claim, as my invention- 1. The provision flector E to 'a door-sill, substantially as set forth.
2. The arrangement of the door-sill gutter C, hinged flap or deilector E, lever F, and bolt or other projection G, substantiallyV as set folth.
3. In the described combination with the elements I C, E, and F, the boltG and slot H, or their equivalents, for the objects designated.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
