Be it known that l, MARTHA A. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in package ties and is adaptable to bundles of various sizes, being designed to provide a device of this character which will not only be substantial and adjustable in its construction but will have a means provided thereon for securely locking the same about the bundle.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package tie constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the sheath thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. 2.
The package tie forming the subject-inatter of the present invention comprises a sheath A, said sheath being approximately elliptical in cross section, the base thereof being substantially flat. rlhe upper side of the sheath is provided with a slot 10, said slot extending the entire length of the sheath. At the rear extremity of the sheath is provided an outwardly projecting lug or ear 11, formed integrally with the base thereof and provided with a transverse slot 12. The slot 12 provides a means whereby the strap 13 forming the main body portion of the tie is secured to the sheath, the same being passed through the slot, bent upon itself and secured in this position. The extremities of the sheath are rounded to present a smooth and finished edge in order that no damage may be imparted to the bundle secured thereby.
A series of transverse bars 14 are attached to the base of the sheath and are convexed therefrom forming a space whereby the Specification of Letters Patent.

A catch 17 is oppositely disposed with respect to said hook and is adapted to engage the hook portion 16 thereof. The catch and hook are connected at their lower extremities by an approximately rectangular spring portion 18 to which is secured the strap by passing the catch portion through the strap at any predetermined interval and allowing the former to bear against the straight portion 18.
From the foregoing it will readily be seen that the hook may be placed at any desired point on the strap, thus supplying a means of adjusting the saine to bundles of various volumes. A further adjustment is obtained in the sheath A, the hook portion 15 being passed under the cross bars 14 unt-il the desired point is reached, the hook 16 then being projected upwardly and engaged by the catch 17, said catch resting on the exterior of said-cross bars. Two adjustments of the tie are thus had, making the present invent-ion applicable to substantially all sizes of bundles.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
An article of manufacture comprising in combination, a sheath approximately elliptical in cross section provided with a longitudinally extending slot in the upper side, and a rearwardly projecting slotted ear on the base thereof, a series of convexed bars secured to said base, a strap secured in said slotted ear, and a hook carried at the opposite extremity of said strap and adapted to b e attached at various positions on said strap and also adapted to engage one of said convexed bars.
