Description

@wat @Mira FREDERICK COLE, CF KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS- Letters Patent No. 96,085, dated October 26, 1869.
PALLET AND BRUSH FOR GRAINING'.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
MPa-
To all whom 'tt 'may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK COLE, of Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pallets and Brushes; and I do hereby declare thatthefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany- `ing drawings, and letters marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 isa perspective representation of my improved pallet, with the brush in position for receiving different-colored paints, and
Figure 2, a sectional elevation of the same.
The object of the present invention is to provide suitable means for distributing evenly upon one brush different-colored paints, preparatory to painting, graining, &c., in ornamental style; and
Its nature consists of a pallet which is provided with a series ot' chambers, corresponding in number to the number of colors to be used in 'any particular case, in which chambers the various colors are placed, and gathered therefrom by a brush, which is so divided oi into suitable sections, that each section will fall into its proper compartment. The back of said compartments being provided with a "scraper, cleans the surplus paint from the brush, as the latter is drawn from the aforesaid pallet; and the divisions between the compartments, projecting upward at their ends, provide convenient means for placing the brush properly on. the pallet, as the whole is hereinafter fully described.
A B `C represent a box-pallet, which is made of metal, or other suitable material, and which is divided oi into`a series of compartments,`by means of partitions I I I, 85e., in order that the various-colored paints used may be kept separate.
These partitions are made quite thin, and their ends at J J J, &c., project above the other parts, in order that every division of the brush S may be readily placed in its proper compartment.
A thin scraper, T, is also so placed in position over therback ends of the partitions, that when the brush is drawn out from the compartments, the surplus paint will be removed, and carried back into its respective. place.
The brush, as will be seen in iig. l, is divided ofi into several sections, corresponding in width to theI width of the compartments in the pallet.
By means of this construction and arrangement, an artist is enabled to carry upon one brush all of the colors necessary to line or shade any ordinary mouldings, r to carry the requisite colors for grainin g walls, 85e., whereby a very great saving is made, both in time and labor.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the' United States, is-
Distributing various colors on to a brush, S, provided with sections P, in combination with a pallet, A B C, provided with compartments I, to hold variouscolored paints, as set forth.
' FREDERICK COLE.\
