ALBERT MOORE WEAVER AND HOLLIS ELTON TAYLOR, OF ALLIGATOR, MISSISSIPPI.
BARREL-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 7, 1910.
. Application filed October 9, 1908. Serial No. 457,009.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, ALBERT MOORE VEAX'ER and HOLLIS ELTON TAYLOR, citizens of the United States, residing at Alligator, in the county of Bolivar and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrel-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in barrel covers, the object being to provide a cover which is ex ceedingly light in construction and one which is air-tight, so that the contents of the barrel will be protected.
A further object of our invention is to provide a. cover which is formed of cloth treated with creosote so as to protect it against insects and to lengthen the lift of the same.
A still further object of our invention is to provide a cover that Will stand rough handling, thereby having great advantages over the wooden covers now in common use.
Vith these objects in view, our invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification:Figure 1 is a vertical section through our improved barrelcover showing it arranged on a barrel. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
In carrying out our improved invention we employ a ring or hoop A preferably formed of wire, over which is stretched tightly a circular piece of cloth B, the edges of the cloth being passed over the ring and brought up against the under-side of the cloth and secured thereto by a row of stitching. A strip of cloth O is then secured to the top of the cover in such a manner that a loop 0 will be formed at the center, forming a handle which enables the cover to be readily lifted.
The cover is adapted to be formed of different sizes to fit different sized barrels, so that when placed in position thereon a tight joint will be formed around the edge and it will be seen that the cloth passing Over the ring forms a packing which insures a tight joint, and it will be seen by this arrangement when the cover is placed in position, as shown, it will be impossible for any insects to enter the barrel, thereby overcoming the disadvantages of wooden covers now in common use, as the cracks in the wooden covers form spaces for the insects to enter.
The cloth is preferably treated with a preparation of creosote so as to strengthen the cloth and to protect the same against rats and mice.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we have provided a barrel cover which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which is so constructed that it .is almost impossible for the same to become broken by rough handling.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A barrel cover comprising a continuous flexible ring having a circular piece of cloth stretched over the same and secured thereon by folding the edges of the cloth back upon itself and securing the same by rows of stitching so as to completely inclose said ring in the hem formed annularly around the edge of the cloth and a strip of cloth arranged transversely on said circular piece of cloth having its end portions secured on said piece of cloth by rows of stitching and the central portion left free to form a central upwardly projecting loop handle portion.
