To all whom it may coiwern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LEIMAN, a citi-.
zen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Case-Locking Devices; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sealing devices such as may be applied to shipping crates and an object of the invention is to provide such a sealing device as will serve to secure the top of the box in place and secure the head of the box to the top so that no nails,screws or other means willd be necessary to hold the top to the hea A further object of the invention is' to provide a seal formed of sheet metal so bent as to make it practically impossible to withdraw the extending end of the seal from the interior of the box for the purpose of lifting the top of the'crate.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, where similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box of such a type as may have applied thereto the sealing device forming the subject mat,- ter of this invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1'; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the seal showing a head in dotted lines together with the sealing wire; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The seal forming the subject matter of this invention may be applied to such a box as described in my pending application bearing Serial Number 788,450 or may be applied to any other type of box or crate, the top of which is designed to be lifted from the crate when the contents are to be removed. One end of the top is caught under an end of the box, while the other end of the top carries the seals forming the sub- .ject matter of the present invention and is not secured by means of nails, screws or any other devices thanthe seal. v
Referring to the drawing, thebox comprises sidesl, a head 2 and a top 3. The top, sidesan'dbottom of the box may be securedby means of cords or" wires 4 such as is common practice.
Fig. 5 shows a fragmentary vertical section through the upper corner of that end of the box opposite the head which carries the seals and it will be seen that the back end 5 has secured thereto'a cleat 6 provided with a groove'7so proportioned as to receive slidingly the end of the top 3. The other end of'the top 3 is provided with a plurality of seals indicated generally at 8 each of which has an outwardly extending shank 9 having perforations 10, while there is provided a return strip 11 substantially parallel to the extending shank 9 and spaced therefrom a distance equal to the thickness of the head 2. In order that the seal may be secured to the top 3, there is a section 12 which may be suitably secured to the top. There are provided as many of these seals as may be found desirable, two being. shown in the drawings.
When it is desired to assemble the box, the top 3 has the end 13 thereof slipped within the groove 7, the length of the box being such that the extending shank 9 and the return portion 11 will be just above the top of the head 2. The endof the top 3 carrying the seals has secured thereto by means of nails *or other securing means a cleat 15 corresponding to the cleat 6, which is secured to the seal by means of nails or other suitable devices 16 which pass through perforations 10. The wire 17 which has previously been passed through the head 2 The manner of securing the seal is indicated in Fig. 3 where it will be seen that a staple 19 bridges the wire 17 and is driven through the head 2 until the points engage the back face of the extending-end 9 of the seal, the
points of the staple 19 being bent at 20 when 1 they enga e the metallic seal and are bent substantially as shown in Fig. 3 to rip the wooden member 2. When assembled as described and shown in Fig. 1. bands 21 are secured to the cleats to hold the corners of the box together. It willbe seen by this construction that no nails, grooves or other similar securing devices are used to secure the top 3 to the head 2, but that these tWo members are held together by means of the seal. The return portion 11 serves a tWofold purpose, namely, it prevents prying of the extending end 9 so as to Withdraw the seal Without breaking the same and it holds in a secure manner the upper end of the head 2 so that the head may not be bent baekwardly to give admittance to the box or crate. It is not considered that the nails, grooves or other securing means as indicated at 16 passing through perforations 10 are necessary inasmuch as the return portion 11 would offer such resistance to the Withdrawing of the extending end 9 as to preclude possibility of a forced entrance into the box Without breaking the seal.

1. In a box construction a cleat having a groove formed therein, a top one end of which is adapted to enter said groove, said cleat being rigid With the top and extending substantially at right angles thereto, a
metallic strip secured to said top and cleat said metallic strip having a portion extending perpendicular to the top, a second portion parallel to the last mentioned portion formed inte ral with the metallic strip and extending substantially perpendicular to the top, a head having parts thereof lying between said parallel portions extending perpendicular to the top, and means for sealing the first mentioned strip to the head.
In a box construction, a top member, a head, a cleat having a side extending substantially perpendicular to the top, a metallic strip secured to the top, a pair of parallel portions extending from the metallic strip substantially perpendicular to the top and adapted to lie one upon each side of the said head, and means for securing one of said parallel portions to the head.
